Last Sunday, HBO premiered “House of the Dragon,” the network’s first “Game of Thrones” spin-off; tacitly acknowledging the medieval fantasy misery fest’s brand, the pilot episode builds to a birth scene shot with grisly excess and ending with mother and child wrapped in funeral shrouds. This week, Apple TV+ kicks off the third and final season of its own “Thrones” spin-off, “See,” with a birth scene that cares about such antediluvian details as tension, stakes, and basic empathy.

With an extremely strong slate so far this year, it’s been difficult to keep up with all of the buzzed-about shows and cult favorites that have left people talking long after the respective finales and August doesn’t appear to offer much of a reprieve. From a few returning series and plenty of new ones, prioritizing what’s an immediate must-see comes down to taste.

A rocky critical reception didn’t stop the show from earning a renewal, and in its second season it emerged as the platform’s most watched drama. Now, the series is set to return for a third and final season. An action-packed trailer promises the return of Jason Momoa as Baba Voss, last seen withdrawing into self-imposed exile after killing his antagonstic brother, Edo.

Now, as the series approaches Season 3, it’s apparently time to call it quits.

As seen in the teaser for “See” Season 3, the post-apocalyptic action series is ending its run after its next batch of episodes.

(The preferred nomenclature, thanks to the magic of rebranding, is “successor series.”) Two years, the series’ finale pissed off the majority of its fanbase for varied reasons, though the common ground they share appears to be that they’re bad at watching TV.

From director Francis Lawrence (“The Hunger Games“), the series, set in a brutal and primitive future, hundreds of years after humankind has lost the ability to see scored a second and third season not too long after its premiere; a big vote of confidence.

The Jason Momoa-led project utilizes sci-fi themes to tell the story of a father’s quest to save his children. Much like last season, the goals remain one step ahead of the complications that face Momoa’s Baba Voss. Unfortunately, this time one of the greatest obstacles came from something all too real; COVID caused the set to shut down completely.

Writer/producer Steven Knight is certainly no stranger to big-swing ideas. One of the men responsible for the BBC drama “Peaky Blinders,” the one-man-driving-in-a-car movie “Locke,” and “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire,” Knight is such a ridiculously prolific writer and creator that he almost seems to be churning out loglines at this point in his career.

Sure, if you’re a fan of Apple products, you probably found enough to keep you interested. (Oooh, can’t wait to get that Apple credit card, huh?) But if you were hoping for a full unveiling of the massive amount of TV original content the tech company has been developing for over a year, then sadly you were probably left wanting more.

At least, on paper. And with this new announcement from Deadline, it looks like the tech company can add another anticipated series to their slate.

Deadline is reporting that Jason “My Man!” Momoa has signed on to star in a new series for Apple, called “See.” While your excitement for anything with Jason Momoa in it might be a little tempered, he’s joining some pretty exciting creators on the project.
