For two relatively young guys, the Oscar nomination Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber earned for “The Disaster Artist” is a long time coming. From “500 Days of Summer” to “The Spectacular Now” to “Fault In Their Stars” the writing duo have shown a unique talent to bring a fresh perspective to familiar genres. At first glance “The Disaster Artist” seems like an odd fit for the writing partners, but as they note in our podcast interview at its core it’s more a movie about friendship than the making of the infamous cult movie “The Room.”

“The Room” is a truly special film. Written, directed, and starring Tommy Wiseau, its famous for just how spectacularly awful it is. And in a world filled with plenty of bad movies, “The Room” rises above all the rest not just because of the horrible acting, writing, set design, and everything else, but also for the legendary behind-the-scenes antics of Wiseau. These near legendary stories are so strange that it’s hard to believe that any of them are actually true.

It’s a film about the making of arguably the worst movie ever made. That is how the team behind “The Disaster Artist” will hope to sell it to a public that may have yet to experience the wonder of Tommy Wiseau‘s self-financed passion project, “The Room.” Just as “Plan 9 from Outer Space” had Tim Burton‘s “Ed Wood“ and “Troll 2” had Michael Paul Stephenson‘s documentary, “Best Worst Movie,” so now does “The Room” have James Franco‘s “The Disaster Artist.” How it will play to the uninitiated remains a legitimate question, but one thing is for certain: its base are going to be in Valhalla.
