A musical comedy television series created by Meredith Scardino, “Girls5eva,” started life as a Peacock series before getting canceled after a second season. Centering on a one-hit-wonder band from the ’90s who gain a second shot at fame when a young rapper samples their song, the series, fortunately, had enough ride-or-die fans that Netflix deemed it worthy of a season pick-up and bought it from Peacock for season three, which is soon approaching.

Based on Adrienne Shelly‘s 2008 film “Waitress” with Keri Russell, “Waitress: The Musical” is one of Broadway’s longest-running musicals in recent history. It ran for more than 1500 performances at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, and returned for a limited engagement at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre after Broadway reopened after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.

Now, the hit show based on a movie gets the movie treatment itself, with “Waitress: The Musical” hitting theaters this December.

At this point, you know what you’re getting when you dive into a comedy produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock (“30 Rock,” “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”): a spunky woman main character and an off-kilter group of eccentrics, all set in an alternate universe where name brand items and hit songs from our world are just off enough to be notable. “Girls5Eva” delivered on that promise in season one, giving us a reunited ’90s girl group full of dysfunctional relationships and — one of the other hallmarks of Fey/Carlock concepts — an undercurrent of darkness.

Breaking news, Kevin Spacey will not be returning to host the Tony Awards this June.  Yes, that’s not exactly shocking considering his current standing following allegations made in the wake of the #MeToo movement especially with one particular stunning charge from noted Broadway star Anthony Rapp.  That being said, considering it was the worst rated Tonys since 2012 he probably wasn’t returning under any scenario.  Today, CBS announced the Tonys were going in a new direction and that Sara Bareilles And Josh Groban will team up to host instead.
