Oscars nominations day is always a happy day for the nominees and this year’s crop was no different. Even if some of their directors, co-stars or colleagues weren’t nominated alongside them. Here’s a rundown of the official reactions from this year’s Academy Award honorees.

After critical acclaim and a short theatrical run, Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” is now available to watch on Netflix’s streaming service.  One aspect of the film that is earning greater regard is the hours of work artists such as production designer Bob Shaw, costume designers Sandy Powell and Christopher Peterson, as well as the visual effects team, went through to chronicle a tale that covers five decades.

None of this really works does it? When it comes to the Oscars, the old formulas for picking the Best Picture winner have sort of been thrown out the window this season. No film won more than one major guild honor. Sure, that’s happened before, but it doesn’t help that the only film that won a guild honor and took BAFTA’s top prize, “Roma,“ is a foreign language film.

The Costume Designers Guild handed out their 2019 awards on Tuesday night and they recognized two of the major frontrunners for the Costume Design Oscar.  Excellence in Period Film went to Sandy Powell and “The Favourite” and Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy went to Ruth E. Carter for “Black Panther.”  Mary E. Vogt took the Contemporary Film honor for “Crazy Rich Asians,” but the film didn’t earn an Academy Award nomination.

One of the pleasures of awards season is when it shines a light on new talents.  In the case of “The Favourite” we knew of director Yorgos Lanthimos, legendary costume designer Sandy Powell and even long respected cinematographer Robbie Ryan.  Fiona Crombie?  Well, she’s now made her mark on the global film stage with her first Oscar nomination for Production Design.

Sandy Powell is one of the coolest people I’ve ever met.  There’s no debate.  The three-time Oscar-winning costume designer oozes style and sophistication the moment she arrives in a room. And when you speak to her you immediately know not only is this woman f***ing brilliant, but she’s blunt and suffers no fools. And she masterfully lets you know it with grace and a welcoming smile. Frankly, if you’re a filmmaker who doesn’t want to work with Powell you’ve got some insecurities you need to deal with.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts revealed the winners of the 2019 BAFTA Awards on Sunday and it crowned a frontrunner for the Best Picture Oscar, “Roma.”  Alfonso Cuaron’s autobiographical drama took Best Film over “The Favourite” which dominated the rest of the proceedings.

“Roma” also won Best Director (Cuaron) as well as Film Not in the English Language (Foreign Language Film) and Best Cinematography.  Along with the DGA honor for Cuaron, it nudges the Netflix release into pole position for Oscar’s top prize.

Sandy Powell could easily win for her work on “The Favourite,” but her double nomination will sap some needed votes away. Ruth Carter is an acclaimed industry veteran who has never won and this looks like a good place for that omission to be rectified. [Updated Feb. 12]

The last two Oscar players have screened and they potentially have turned the season on its head.  You can decern our thoughts on the impressive “Vice” separately, but the curious case of “Mary Poppins Returns” needs its own moment in the spotlight.

Rob Marshall’s sequel to the 1964 classic is set 25 years later with Emily Blunt reprising the role as the mischievous nanny who has returned to assist the now grown up Banks children,  Michael and Jane (Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer), as well as Michael’s own offspring.

In his latest effort, Yorgos Lanthimos takes on 18th-century royalty with “The Favourite,” a dark comedy loosely based on the story of Queen Anne of England and her closest confidants: the Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) and newcomer Abigail (Emma Stone) who battle for the monarch’s love. In what could be considered one of the best roles of Stone’s career to date, Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz stun in this unique period drama with contemporary flair.
