Marvel Chief Kevin Feige recently admitted that Marvel is returning to San Diego Comic-Con, even revealing that “The Fantastic Four” will start production on the Monday after Comic-Con weekend, July, 25-28. But it’s a slow Friday, a day for rumors so let’s take a look at what the Interwebz is saying.

Another one bites the dust. In a year that has already seen so many events and festivals cancel due to the COVID-19 pandemic, San Diego Comic-Con has joined their ranks as yet another summer film/TV staple is skipping 2020. According to the organizers of San Diego Comic-Con (via THR), the annual event is being canceled for the first time in the convention’s 50-year history, as a spokesperson describes it as an “extraordinary measure.”

It’s been an interesting 48 hours for Warner Bros. and DC Films. On Friday, it was reported that Ben Affleck was leaving the Batman role, or more precisely would be phasing himself out of the role (by Kim Masters of THR who is rarely wrong, FYI). It seemed like a PR disaster; just 24 hours before the Warner Bros. Comic Con panel, it appeared as though there would be no more Affleck as Batman in the DCEU.

“Dunkirk” sees Nolan tackling WWII, and bringing together an interesting cast of young stars to lead his movie —  Fionn Whitehead, Aneurin Barnard, Harry Styles, James D’Arcy, Jack Lowden, Barry Keoghan — with more established names like Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and Cillian Murphy slotted into supporting roles for the film detailing Operation Dynamo, the near-miraculous evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and other Allied troops from the French seaport of Dunkirk, which took place from May-June of 1940.

Among the plethora of trailers to drop at San Diego Comic Con, was the new look at Oliver Stone’s “Snowden.” And in fitting with a movie about privacy, there was a secret screening of the film, followed by a Q&A with Edward Snowden himself, beamed in on a stream from Russia. But it was during the panel discussion where the most interesting details were revealed, including the nugget that — surprise, surprise — major studios didn’t necessarily want to hold the hot potato of this movie and subject matter.

Whedon mostly fielded softballs from the crowd, except for one query in particular from a fan asking, in essence, how to get his own independent films made. This prompted a reply from Whedon that was quite candid about the state of the studio system which, in his view, is one where they are trying to pre-fabricate success.

In case it hasn’t been made explicitly clear already, Warner Bros. really, really wants you to like them, and in particular, “Suicide Squad.” They need the movie to be everything “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” wasn’t: across-the-board approved by both critics and fanboys, an undeniable financial success (though with the money thrown at extensive reshoots and marketing, one has to wonder how much the budget has skyrocketed), and proof that they know what they’re doing with DC Comics properties.
