Criterion’s January Slate Announced: James L. Brooks’ ‘Broadcast News,’ Plus Reissues Of Two Sam Fuller Classics

The Criterion Collection revealed its January slate on Friday and as per usual, it’s another solid line-up. While there’ve been mild complaints that only two new discs were announced, the two reissues are just as exciting if not more so.

Starting off with the new, on January 25th, the speciality DVD company will release James L. Brooks 1987 dramedy classic, “Broadcast News” starring Albert Brooks, William Hurt and Holly Hunter, his second feature-length effort at the time — which he wrote, directed and produced — and still perhaps his most well-regarded film.

Revaluating The Unsung: The Old Hollywood New Wave?

Love this not entirely new, but worthy observation by J. Hoberman in the Village Voice’s celebration piece of Nicholas Ray’s “In A Lonely Place” (an incredible picture we also wrote about) which is really on-the-mark. After all the French New Wave did adore these guys.

Ray’s cohorts include Robert Aldrich (“Kiss Me Deadly,” “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?”), Budd Boetticher (“Seven Men from Now, Comanche Station”), Samuel Fuller (“Pickup on South Street,” “Shock Corridor”), Anthony Mann (“The Naked Spur,” “The Furies,” “El Cid”) and Don Siegel (“Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” “The Killers” and later on “Dirty Harry”) as well as the exiled Joseph Losey and blacklisted Abraham Polonsky.

Samuel L. Jackson Casts Further Doubt On Nick Fury Role In ‘Iron Man 2’

Much to geek chagrin everywhere, Samuel L. Jackson has said he might not return as S.H.I.E.L.D agent Nick Fury in “Iron Man 2,” because Marvel studios was giving him a lowball offer (much like they did Mickey Rourke).

In a recent interview with IGN, Jackson stuck to his story and elaborated a bit on Marvel’s money “crisis.” “I’m not real sure that I’m gonna have the opportunity to do that again because we’ve been having some difficulty coming to an agreement,” he said and added.

December Criterion Collection Releases

Good News for all those obsessive cinephiles out there, the December releases from the Criterion Collection have been announced. Even though the high-brow distributor is only giving us two releases in for Xmas, it’s still noteworthy, mostly because it consists of Sam Fuller’s extremely polemic and previously unavailable film (in the United States), “White Dog.” Lars von Trier’s homage to film making techniques of past (Russian experimental, American Film Noir) “Europa,” is also slated to be released in Criterion form this December.
