Back in March, veteran actor Sam Elliott made some tasteless comments about Jane Campion’s compelling western thriller “Power of The Dog” while appearing on the WTF podcast. Elliot took issue with the “piece of shit” film about the American West having been shot by a woman from New Zealand and was upset about the story’s homosexual overtones. Campion herself responded in kind, calling him a “bitch” and reminding Elliott that he is just an actor, not a cowboy.

His Montana cowboy ranch family drama, “Yellowstone,” is a major hit for regular TV audiences (we got sucked in and even started a podcast), he’s created another show with Jeremy Renner about the prison system in Michigan (“Mayor Of Kingstown“), and “Yellowstone” is so big, it’s spawned a spin-off show, “1883,” which is basically about the great grandparents of John Dutton on “Yellowstone,” and shows how the origins of their Montana empire.

The fourth incarnation of the tale is refreshingly grounded with an incredible lead performance by Cooper, gorgeous cinematography by Matthew Libatique, a very good leading lady debut by Ms. Gaga and an abundance of potential Best Original Song contenders.  The Warner Bros. release already wowed Venice and will likely send Toronto into overhype mode after its North American debut on Sunday.
