There was something about this year’s SAG Awards ceremony. It wasn’t as stressful as the 2021 Oscar Ceremony. It wasn’t as suffocating as the 2021 Emmys. It was spacious and, almost to a presenter, everyone was extremely happy to be there. Honestly, you can’t say that about most awards shows.

If Netflix was going to have a golden night this award season it was going to be at the SAG Awards and, surprise, the actors came through. The streaming service took major honors including the Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture for “Trial of the Chicago 7” and “The Crown” won for Drama Series ensemble for the second year in a row. Overall, Netflix won 7 SAG Awards categories announced during the pre-tapped ceremony.

Like many awards shows and industry guilds, the past 12 months have been rough for the SAG Awards. Much of the Screen Actors Guild’s membership was unable to find work for most of the year either in their chosen profession or in their daily gigs. The awards show itself saw the Recording Academy jump on their original telecast date of Sunday, March 14. And, in a battle between the Grammys and the SAG Awards, the latter was never going to win.

Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” follows a family of Korean-American immigrants who try to reboot their lives on a farm in 1980s Arkansas. The semi-autobiographical drama finds Steven Yeun essentially playing Chung’s father. But when we discussed his role earlier this month he revealed he had to face his own preconceived notions of his own father to ground the character.

In perhaps the smartest cost-saving move for a major award show this year but the worst technically, the 2021 SAG Awards nominations were announced by actors Daveed Diggs and Lily Collins via the ceremony’s official Instagram page. After a delay for Diggs to find Collins in the actual Instagram Live stream, the nominees were finally unveiled. And, as expected, there were all sorts of surprises.

The nominees for Best Ensemble for a Motion Picture went to “Da 5 Bloods,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “One Night in Miami,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Minari.” A Best Picture bellwether, four of the five nominated ensembles were nominated last year.

How long can Hollywood ride the “Parasite” Best Picture Oscar-winning high? Can we bottle it? Have it delivered via Postmates? Because this town hasn’t felt this light in ages. Of course, it won’t last long for one reason or another, but we’ll gladly breathe it in for another day or two. Maybe three if we’re lucky. (If events in Washington, D.C. will let us.)

The shortened Oscar window led to a very busy January, but overall, the season felt like it moved quicker than you’d expect with just two weeks cut from the calendar.

Bong Joon Ho’s Palme d’Or winner shocked by overcoming competition from other Best Picture nominees “The Irishman,” “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” and “Jojo Rabbit” to take home the Screen Actors Guild’s highest honor. Along with PGA Award winner “1917,” which earned no SAG nominations, its arguably now a co-front runner for Best Picture with final voting set to begin in less than two weeks.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt are actors that you refer to as “notoriously press shy.” They aren’t necessarily difficult with the media, but something in their DNA has taught them that less is more if you want to keep that increasingly rare genuine “moviestar” status. That’s one reason why the DGA’s 600 seat theater was at capacity for a film that was released four months ago, Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.”  DiCaprio and Pitt rarely appear on stage to discuss their work, even for their fellow actors.

A busy awards season gets even busier for Robert De Niro as the Screen Actors Guild announced the legendary actor will receive the union’s 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award. De Niro will be honored during the SAG Awards telecast on January 19.

The 2019 Screen Actor’s Guild Awards were handed out Sunday night in Los Angeles and the big winner was, surprisingly, “Black Panther” which took home the best cast ensemble prize; SAG-AFTRA’s equivalent of the Best Picture award.  This is the second major guild honor that has gone to a different film after “Geen Book” took the PGA Award.  If “Roma’s” Alfonso Cuaron (or “BlacKkKlansman’s” Spike Lee) wins the DGA Award it may come down to the BAFTA honor for any film to earn some true momentum for Best Picture.

We got a war coming between the Screen Actors Guild and the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. According to a new statement from SAG-AFTRA, it would appear that the Academy is using some less-than-savory tactics to get some exclusive presenters at its awards show.

In a statement, SAG-AFTRA says that the Academy has used “graceless pressure tactics and attempts to control the awards show talent pipeline.” Without going into too much detail, the crux of the argument stems from reports that actors are being pressured by the Academy to skip presenting at the SAG Awards.

“A Star is Born” led all films with four nominations including Ensemble, Best Actor (Bradley Cooper), Best Actress (Lady Gaga) and Best Supporting Actor (Sam Elliott). “BlacKkKlansman” took three nods including Best Actor (John David Washington), Best Supporting Actor (Adam Driver) and Ensemble.

The members of the Screen Actors Guild are a quirky bunch.  The entire SAG-AFTRA organization has a pool of 129,000 or so members that is widdled down to 2,500 or so volunteers who vote for the annual SAG Awards as the “nominating committee.”  Sometimes they come to screenings, sometimes they don’t.  Sometimes they watch screeners, sometimes they don’t.  What we do know is they love Netflix.  Really.  In fact, it should be a constant theme when considering who will and who won’t be nominated for SAG honors this year.
