If Netflix was going to have a golden night this award season it was going to be at the SAG Awards and, surprise, the actors came through. The streaming service took major honors including the Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture for “Trial of the Chicago 7” and “The Crown” won for Drama Series ensemble for the second year in a row. Overall, Netflix won 7 SAG Awards categories announced during the pre-tapped ceremony.

Like many awards shows and industry guilds, the past 12 months have been rough for the SAG Awards. Much of the Screen Actors Guild’s membership was unable to find work for most of the year either in their chosen profession or in their daily gigs. The awards show itself saw the Recording Academy jump on their original telecast date of Sunday, March 14. And, in a battle between the Grammys and the SAG Awards, the latter was never going to win.

In perhaps the smartest cost-saving move for a major award show this year but the worst technically, the 2021 SAG Awards nominations were announced by actors Daveed Diggs and Lily Collins via the ceremony’s official Instagram page. After a delay for Diggs to find Collins in the actual Instagram Live stream, the nominees were finally unveiled. And, as expected, there were all sorts of surprises.

The nominees for Best Ensemble for a Motion Picture went to “Da 5 Bloods,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “One Night in Miami,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Minari.” A Best Picture bellwether, four of the five nominated ensembles were nominated last year.
