Far from infallible as a filmmaker, M. Night Shyamalan’s catalog of work is never anything less than bold. Sometimes the result is a classic, and sometimes the result is, at the very least, a curious misfire. “Knock at the Cabin” is very much an example of the former. This apocalyptic, psychological horror, his best work since “Split,” is a relentlessly gripping winner.

It’s almost hard to believe that Apple TV+ is old enough already to have a show about to reach its conclusion after four seasons, but that’s where we are with the underrated “Servant,” a twisted little gem that was created by Tony Basgallop and executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan (who has also directed a few episodes). One of the streaming giant’s first series way back in November 2019, “Servant” initially felt like something of a psychological mystery about a grieving mother given an impossible second chance, but it has descended into deeper levels of surreal chaos with each season.

Do you remember the story of Joshua from the Bible? The one where the Israelites, led by Joshua en route to Canaan, march around the city of Jericho for seven days until its grand walls collapse? It’s a story of perseverance, certainly, but also, for the folks in Jericho, one of caution. No matter how well you fortify the world around you, strong walls don’t really mean much if they’re flimsy and sieged by forces greater than you.

Given his checkered career, there were no guarantees that M. Night Shyamalan‘s involvement in the AppleTV+ series “Servant” would bode well for the new streaming platform. However, “Servant” ended up being one of the better-received shows on AppleTV+ last year by critics and audiences alike. Of course, Shyamalan doesn’t deserve all the credit there. The series is originally the brainchild of BAFTA-nominated writer Tony Basgallop, and the show’s unnerving set-up catered itself to any viewer who loves the creepy and macabre.

M. Night Shyamalan’s psychological horror series for AppleTV “Servant” was a curious affair, in that, it ended with one of his trademark twists, and a creepy ellipsis, almost as if he took a movie idea of his and turned it into a limited series. “Servant” had a perfectly chilling ending, but behold, well, now it’s a series and the story continues (which is part of the neverending-story quality of television, but that’s a rant for another time).

Noted devotee of psychological terror and surprise twist endings, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan goes behind the creative curtain of TV once more—his first time since 2016’s “Wayward Pines” finale— with Apple TV+‘s new series “Servant.” Working this time with creator/writer Tony Basgallop (“What Remains,” “24: Live Another Day“), a BBC network veteran, “Servant,” centers on a wounding trauma that’s built upon a ridiculous conceit.

Parents always want the best for their kids and—sometimes—that means enlisting the help of others to accomplish this responsibility. They pour over the resumes of prospective caregivers, as the individuals themselves smile from ear to ear from across the kitchen table. Inevitably—however—cracks begin to show in the person’s friendly façade, and their malicious intentions bubble and boil over into violence. It’s been a fairly common trope in film and TV, but it’s one that comeback kid M.

At one time, Guy Ritchie’s brand had him leading the post-”Pulp Fiction” wave of directors following in the wake of Quentin Tarantino, with his own distinctly British crime pictures that mixed action and comedy with equal verve. Now he’s just a guy stuck in the blockbuster rut making stuff like “Sherlock Holmes” or this summer’s “King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword.” Yawn.

“As TV has become more like movies, movies have become more like TV,” Laika CEO Travis Knight said about the culture of remakes and sequels, and he’s spot on. While television has certainly experienced a creative renaissance in the past decade, that industry is also just as focused as its movie counterparts in exercising IP for maximum value. Lately, that has meant seeing countless shows based on movies headed to the small screen (such as “The Departed,” announced earlier today).

They reported recently — and it was disseminated by folks like Cinematical and Popcrunch — that Martin Scorsese thought ginger-haired “Harry Potter” star Rupert Grint was the bees knees, the next Leonardo DiCaprio, and that director wanted him for some gangster picture.
