The director is perhaps best known for his 1981 horror “Possession,” but right before that iconic picture, Zulawski made “L’important c’est d’aimer.” This story of a love triangle still features his distinctive touch, but offers a look at the filmmaker in a slightly different — but no less affecting — register.

Few things titillate film obsessives more than the masterpieces that never were. How many geeky conversations have you gotten into or overheard that begin with “Well, if Stanley Kubrick had actually done ‘Napoleon’….” History is littered with films that could have been special had they, you know, been made. And “Henri-Georges Clouzot’s Inferno” is a fascinating peek at a potential masterpiece by the French Hitchcock. It’s hard to say whether or not “Inferno” would have changed the way people watch or make movies, but it certainly could have.

Anthology films. Why are they littered with talent, usually the greatest directors of that particular time, but still generally come out empty or with middling results at best? Part Two of our look at omnibus films continues. Part one is here.

“Paris, je t’aime”
The gist: “Paris, je t’aime” was a warm, unwieldy collection of short films about the City of Light by 21 directors, each segment roughly broken down to a coincide with Paris’ administrative districts.

It’s that time of the week again, TGIFridays! By all accounts the box-office showdown this week will be between Todd Phillips’ surprise. come-from-behind R-Rated comedy, “The Hangover” and Tony Scott’s remake, errr, retelling of “The Taking Of Pelham 123,” (which sort of has a terrible title as far as mainstream audiences are concerned, the studio is banking on their deep pockets for high-dollar mainstream promotion and the names of Denzel Washington and John Travolta). ‘Hangover’ is fun and all, but with those mostly unknown actors one would think it would be an embarrassment if ‘Pelham’ couldn’t best it this weekend, but with strong word of mouth for the lost-in-Vegas, fratboy comedy, the race sounds like it’ll be very close (and if Phillips wins, hell, all the more power to him and the future of R-Rated comedies, which is excellent).
