Romola Garai stole the show at the 2013 BAFTA Awards with a very unexpected story – slipped in during the presentation of a comedy award – about her recent childbirth. “I had the misfortune of having 23 stitches in my vagina,” she told the audience. “So I didn’t think I’d be laughing at anything for a long time.” The subversive quip wasn’t the laugh line the awards show producers had given her; Garai had written something of her own that was personal, relatable, hilarious, horrific, and shocking, all at once.

“Amulet” tells the story of a former soldier Tomaz that finds himself on tough times, homeless and without a job.

There is more than a touch of ‘Buffy‘ Season 6 in the way Romola Garai‘s Midnight-dwelling directorial debut, “Amulet,” finally shakes down — and, I shouldn’t have to say, that’s a compliment. The much-maligned penultimate season of Joss Whedon‘s era-defining TV show has recently come in for gratifying reevaluation as its darker tone, the greater pessimism of its worldview and especially its investigation of a masculinity that in 2002 had scarcely even begun to be described as “toxic,” have proven prescient indeed.
