One of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival‘s buzziest films finally gets its US theatrical release next month. That’s right, Thomas Cailley‘s “The Animal Kingdom” hits theaters and video on demand in March and also serves as the opening night film of “Rendezvous With French Cinema” in NYC on February 29.

What’s there to say about French director Michel Hazanavicius? His two “OSS 117” films with Jean Dujardin are foreign cult comedies. And then the duo struck gold stateside with “The Artist,” which won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor at the 2012 Oscars. But Hazanavicius hasn’t caught on with US audiences since then: not with 2014’s “The Search” with his wife Bérénice Bejo, or 2017’s “Redoubtable,” a regrettable biopic dramedy about Jean-Luc Godard.

Michel Hazanavicius‘ horror-comedy, “Z (Comme Z)” (known as “Final Cut” in the U.S. thus far), was supposed to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, but when things went virtual, sale agents Wild Bunch International pulled the film from the fest. Arguably, it has a better slot now as it was announced as the opening night film of the Cannes Film Festival out of competition.

As Screen Daily reports, this trend continues, albeit on a much smaller scale, with French director Michel Hazanavicius’s reworking of the 2017 Japanese cult horror “One Cut of the Dead.” Hazanavicius’s film, titled “Final Cut” (or “Z (comme Z)” in French), has just started principal photography in Paris.
