Jonathan Nolan’s career in the entertainment industry has been almost always linked to his brother, Christopher. However, in recent years, Jonathan has stepped out of the very large shadow of his filmmaking brother and found success on TV. Starting as a creator, writer, producer on CBS’ long-running “Person of Interest,” it appears that Nolan has found his stride on his most recent series “Westworld.” And in a new AMA on Reddit, Nolan took time to share an interesting link between the popular HBO show and his famous ‘Batman’ collaborations with his brother.

There are great albums, and then there’s the rarer field of great stories about the making of great albums. In the latter category, you’ll find The Rolling Stones‘ double-LP achievement Exile On Main Street. The band’s 1972 album is the stuff of legend, and a damn fantastic rock ‘n roll record, that found the band both at the height of their powers while also spinning out of control. It’s a tale made for the big screen, and wouldn’t you know it, that’s where the story is headed.

That sound yesterday following the presentation of yesterday of “Tron: Legacy” footage at Comic Con? We just made the exact same noise. We’re already more excited about “Boardwalk Empire,” the new HBO series from Martin Scorsese and “The Sopranos” veteran Terence Winter, then we are about most movies this year, and now Deadline are reporting that the two are teaming up with Mick Jagger for another HBO series, one that sounds like it’ll be right in our wheelhouse.

Albert Maysles Does Rufus, Brings Back The Stones

The CD/DVD set of Rufus Wainwright’s concert film, “Milwaukee at Last!!!” is of particular interest because it was shot by legendary cinema verite documentarian Albert Maysles, or at least the still-rocking 82-year-old filmmaker lead the team of cinematographers who assisted him in shooting the concert. [Vulture]

Maysles latest documentary, “Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!” made its world premiere at the New York Film Festival last weekend and we were in attendance. The 27-ish-minute doc is essentially outtake concert footage from the “Gimmie Shelter” documentary shot at Madison Square Garden and features brief appearances by Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.

The title of Sonic Youth’s seminal avante-noise alt-rock record Daydream Nation, has been appropriated and appropriated by a Hayden Panettiere film vehicle no less. Kieran Culkin is also in talks to star in the film that has nothing to do with the downtown New York noiseniks. No they can’t sue. Titles are not copywritable in the United States. [Variety]

The documentary “Kurt Cobain: About a Son,” is coming out on DVD February 19 via ShoutFactory.

The Playlist was out sick today (waaaaah!), here’s a smattering of semi-interesting things that happened in the last 24-48 hours.

– Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Stones live concert documentary, “Shine A Light,” will open the 2008 Berlin Film Festival on February 7. Marty and the crusty, decrepit Stones will be on hand. The film features guest performances from Jack White of the White Stripes, Christina Aguilera and Buddy Guy. [Variety]

Benicio Del Toro Wants To Make ‘Che’ Film Like Rolling Stones Deep Cuts

Benicio Del Toro – who more than passingly resembles Wolfman Jack these days, as he prepares for his role as Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara – loves his music.

In fact, he loves it so much he’d rather discuss how he uses it for acting more than he’d like to talk about the process of acting itself. In a recent Esquire profile on the Puerto Rican-born actor, Del Toro – almost freaked out by the responsibility of playing Che – distracted himself by discussing his music picks and employed Rolling Stone album metaphors for the two back-to back Che films (presently titled “The Argentine” and “Guerrilla”) he’ll be filming with Steven Soderbergh (filming has already begun in Spain).

‘Darjeeling Limited’ Soundtrack Tracklist Finalized

As we mentioned a week or so ago, “The Darjeeling Limited” soundtrack is due in stores on September 25 and now the finalized tracklist is out.

Wes Anderson fans generally peeved that not every single song in the movie is included on the CD should be somewhat happy. The film uses 24 songs (lots of score from Satyajit Ray films; no Mark Mothersbaugh this time) in it and the CD contains 22 of those tracks, including the first ever Rolling Stones track on a Wes Anderson CD (we called it, “Play With Fire” makes the cut, thanks Abkco).

If Marty Scorsese suddenly fell out of touch would the world go topsy-turvy? Ok, arguably, during the “Kundun” – “Bringing Out The Dead” phase he was greatly out of touch, but a contemporary tour documentary on the decrepit Rolling Stones, now? Discuss. We would have much rather seen a “No Direction Home“-like retrospective. Oh well. Indie -kids looking for some sort of hip association will be pleased to note that the White Stripes’ Jack White makes a guest appearance.

‘Darjeeling Limited’ Soundtrack Partly Revealed

The lucky bloggers at Rolling Stone caught a sneak preview of Wes Anderson’s “The Darjeeling Limited” and as the soundtrack race heat up, they’ve revealed some of the pop music in the film’s soundtrack.

So this is your chance to look away, if like us, you prefer to be pleasantly surprised by Anderson’s music choices (oh well). As one might have suspected, The Kinks’ Powerman songs already heard in the film’s trailer are incorporated in the movie as well as another Ray Davies track from Lola versus Powerman and the Money-Go-Round, Part One, “Powerman.”

Other tracks used in the 5th Anderson film is the 1969 hit “Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)” by mostly one hit wonder, British folk singer, Peter Sarstedt, the classic impressionist piano piece, “Claire De Lune,” by Debussy and – after skipping one film (no mick and keef in ‘Aquatic’) – the Rolling Stones are back with Out Of Our Heads’ “Play With Fire” (only the U.S.
