He’s also sticking with a period setting for his next project, a remake of “Lawrence of Arabia.”

Few moviegoers who saw “The Day After Tomorrow,” “2012” or even “White House Down” thought they were anything more than overblown extravaganza and a nice escape from the monotony of the real world. Frankly, isn’t that why many of us go to the movies in the first place?

The man is known for making big-budget disaster films such as “Independence Day,” “The Day After Tomorrow,” and his upcoming feature, “Moonfall.” But there’s one disaster film he wasn’t able to get made. And the reason for it is because he got stuck doing “Godzilla.”

Speaking to THR, Roland Emmerich talked about his career and his upcoming film, “Moonfall.” But he also took the time to explain why he ended up making the 1998 film, “Godzilla,” which is one of his films that didn’t resonate very much with audiences.

We’re talking about the guy who helmed “Independence Day,” “The Day After Tomorrow,” “The Patriot,” “2012,” and “White House Down.” So, even though “Midway” might not have been a highly-anticipated sequel based on a comic book series, Emmerich delivered yet another action blockbuster that surprised folks last year.

However, when you take a look at exactly what was being released, including a Roland Emmerich-directed “Midway,” a family-friendly “Playing with Fire,” the holiday rom-com “Last Christmas,” and the latest Stephen King adaptation that is a long-awaited sequel to “The Shining,” common sense would dictate that Mike Flanagan’s “Doctor Sleep” would walk away with the box office crown.

There’s the plot, which was absolutely ridiculous (but in a painful, not fun way), the subpar acting, the uninspired direction, and so much more. Needless to say, there are plenty of film fans that wish ‘Resurgence’ just never existed. And surprisingly, one of those people is none other than Roland Emmerich, the film’s director.

Despite initial production delays due to a failed deal with Sony, Emmerich is finally able to make his “Midway” movie, featuring a star-studded cast and a $100 million budget.

This is definitely not the first film about the Battle of Midway, a pivotal naval battle in World War II.

If opting for the latter, what could be a better pick than the 1996 film “Independence Day“? A box office hit, “Independence Day” sometimes gets lost in the rubble of doomsday movies that don’t quite live up to Roland Emmerich‘s film.
