At $1.43 billion in global grosses, the film is Warner Bros.’ biggest film of all time and the absolute runaway hit of 2023. And it’s all thanks to Michael Cera’s Allan character. Well, that’s not really all that correct, even if he is this writer’s favorite part.

It would appear that in a post-COVID-19 world, film production is tricky, to say the least, with all sorts of safety precautions that have to be followed. For cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, he knows all about that, as the DP for one of the first big productions of the “new normal,” Taylor Swift’s “Cardigan” music video.

Likely frontrunner Roger Deakins (“1917”) was joined in the Theatrical Release category by Rodrigo Prieto (“The Irishman”), Robert Richardson (“Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”), Phedon Papamichael (“Ford v Ferrari”) and Lawrence Sher (“Joker”). The nominees almost always lineup with Oscar’s Best Cinematography award considering the duplication between the ASC and the Academy’s Cinematography branch.

For the final weekend of the exhibit, MOMI put on a full-blown retrospective of his work over two days featuring the lesser-seen, more personal Scorsese films, “A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese through American Movies,” “My Voyage to Italy (Il mio viaggio in Italia)” and docs like “No Direction Home” and “The Last Waltz.”

However, it was the impressive panel after the screening of“Silence” that brought a special salute to the exhibit in its entirety, which included cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, screenwriter Jay Cocks, who along with co-writing “Silence,” also co-wrote “The Age of Innocence” and “Gangs of New York,” longtime collaborator Academy-award-winning editor Thelma Schoonmaker, and finally Scorsese himself, 30 minutes late thanks to an unexpected traffic collision in Queens.

And THR celebrates the lensers who made visual magic this year with their latest cinematographer roundtable.

And on days when the world feels particularly ugly, such reminders can feel vitally necessary. Of course, the craft of the cinematographer is not about prettification, but about communication —in many ways the purest of all the cinematic disciplines, cinematography is about telling the story of the film’s themes, mood and atmosphere through visuals: through the interplay of light and shade, color and motion.

In the last two years, he’s directed two movies (“Birdman” and “The Revenant“) that have pushed the boundaries of the medium and won him consecutive Directing Oscars, a feat only done twice before in Oscar history.
