First Independent Grabs Rob Siegel’s ‘Big Fan’

As we reported earlier in the week, Rob Siegel (screenwriter of “The Wrestler”) told audiences in the “Big Fan,” Q&A during the Independent Film Festival of Boston that the obsession portrait, starring Patton Oswalt, would hit theaters in August and that a distributor would be officially announced during the Tribeca Film Festival.

And he stuck to the plan, First Independent Pictures acquired the U.S. rights to the film, but the timeframe is still not exact with the film is looking at a release in either August or September.

Rob Siegel’s ‘Big Fan’ Starring Patton Oswalt, Hitting Theaters In August

Those desperately wondering when they’ll get a chance to see Rob Siegel’s directorial debut, “Big Fan,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year should hang on to their pants.

During a screening of “Big Fan,” at the Independent Film Festival in Boston, Siegel said the film is getting prepped for a release in August, a small distributor has picked up the film and the official announcement will come out this week during the Tribeca Film Festival.

‘Slumdog’ And ‘Milk’ Take Top Writers Guild Award Prizes

The last “major” film guild to present their awards has finally done so. The WGA just announced the winners for this year and they are:

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Milk, Written by Dustin Lance Black

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Slumdog Millionaire, Screenplay by Simon Beaufoy, Based on the Novel Q and A by Vikas Swarup

DOCUMENTARY SCREENPLAY
Waltz with Bashir, Written by Ari Folman

We expect the Oscars to be the same really, except that ‘Bashir’ wasn’t nominated for Best Documentary and it’s probably going to win the Best Foreign Film award.

Sundance Report: ‘Adventureland,’ ‘Big Fan,’ ‘Push’ & ‘The Messenger’

More Sundance and more reviews our in. Thoughts on Greg Mottola’s “Adventureland” seemed mixed. Some people seem to dig it, some people not so much, but no one seems to either love or hate it, which is maybe an ok thing. Maybe it will have a long, cult-ish shelf life.

Our contributor Jonathan Hafter writes, “[Adventureland”] is probably going succeed more on the audience’s connection to Mottola’s “Superbad” and reluctant-star Kristen Stewart than on whether it’s all that good.

Despite sales being apparently slow and sluggish, movies are being bought at Sundance, it’s just that some studios don’t want to make the blunder of 2008 for buying something like “Hamlet 2” for $10 million dollars and the film generating all of a $4.9 million pittance. People aren’t being brazen with their money this year. IFC Films prez said to the New York Times, “We’re not going to get into a bidding war.

Will Robert Siegel Be The First Onion Alumni To Be Nominated For An Academy Award?

When Darren Aronofsky’s “The Wrestler” was first announced, we were in absolute disbelief. We thought it was almost a practical joke because the concept seemed ridiculous. In fact, we semi-seriously assumed it was a comedy and probably based off the ‘what if?’ life of ’80s WWF star Randy “Macho Man” Savage (given that the name of the character in the film is Randy “The Ram” Robinson, and Mickey Rourke’s and his striking resemblance, we still think there’s something to this).
