OK, we’re already past the halfway mark of 2023, so it’s time for a Best-Of-Year, So Far list, cool? As usual, our mid-year list contains films released right up until, well, yesterday, basically. Our “rules,” insofar as we stick to them, is that films on this should have had a U.S. theatrical release and not just show up at a film festival, but as you might remember from the past, we bend those rules a little here and there.

Filmmaker Cristian Mungiu is no stranger to Cannes acclaim. Back in 2007, he won the Palme d’Or for his film “4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days.” Since then, he’s debuted multiple films at the festival taking home various awards. And now, his latest feature, which again was met with great reviews out of Cannes, “R.M.N.,” is finally getting a North American release thanks to IFC Films.

CANNES – We are living in yet another era of European history where old battles over the borders of nation-states are being disputed. Russia has invaded the sovereign nation of Ukraine after already annexing the province of Crimea less than a decade ago. There is concern the battle over Brexit could spark violence over a potential hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. In many ways, the growth of the European Union has helped to ease and spark some of these conflicts.
