The witching hour is most definitely upon us, and as Halloween draws near, streaming giant Netflix is adding a new original series to its ever-growing catalog of titles. Inspired by the Archie comic of the same name, “Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina” is a spooky and stylish adaptation of the devilish coming-of-age tale. However, don’t expect this to be a reboot of the late-’90s “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” as ‘Chilling Adventures’ has more in common with the CW’s “Riverdale” than the ABC sitcom.

While the rulebook for when to launch a TV series has been thrown out the window in the era of Peak TV, the fall months remain some of the busiest with both returning favorites and new potentially binge-worthy series. October see’s a lot for both streaming and cable services with too many to even include on the list. Those left off but worth noting include the return of The CW superhero series “Black Lightning,” “The Flash” and “Arrow” along with another returning shows such as Showtime’s “Ray Donovan,” NBC’s brilliant “The Good Place,” AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and AMC’s “Fresh off the Boat.” New series include Netflix’s “Wanderlust” and Hulu’s “Into the Dark.”

But, alas, we had to narrow the list to 11, and here’s what we feel like are the best bets for TV in October:

The 2018 MTV Movie and TV Awards were handed out Monday night, er, Saturday night and then edited and aired Monday night for the world’s enjoyment.  Tiffany Haddish was an energetic host and took home the Best Comedic Performance Award, but the big winners were “Black Panther” and “Stranger Things” which won four and three statues respectively.

Other major winners included “It” which won Best Onscreen Team and “Gaga: Five Foot Two” which took the Best Music Documentary category.

MTV announced the nominees for the second  MTV Movie and TV Awards (formerly the MTV Movie Awards) and after combining the two genres for the first time a year ago there were some category changes this time around.  Gone are some of the more intriguing categories such as Best Host, Next Generation, Best American Story, Best Fight Against The System, Tearjerker, Best Duo, “Trending” and Musical Moment.  Reality TV Competition is simply just Reality Series/Franchise (yes, “Franchise”) which finds “RuPaul’s Drag Race” the only “competition” show to get nominated in the new format and, sadly, Best Documentary is now just Best Music Documentary.

The success of season one of “Riverdale” is as surprising as it isn’t. Over the years, The CW has created a litany of popular shows, especially for a certain demographic, while also spreading their net to less familiar genres. For every “Arrow” there’s a “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” and for every “The Originals” there’s “Jane the Virgin.” They all follow the familiar beats that we’ve come to know from romantic comedies to dystopian science fiction (and even zombies) but add to it a fresh, youthful take.

When you weren’t looking, “Riverdale” became the pop-culture obsession you didn’t know you needed. Based on the Archie comics, the CW series takes place in the present and offers a subversive look at Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their circle of friends, exploring the darkness that lurks beneath the small town’s wholesome image. A worthy successor to shows like “The O.C.” and “Gossip Girl,” “Riverdale” swooped in and filled a void in the teen soap opera genre, quickly becoming a guilty pleasure you didn’t really have to feel bad about watching.

While I’ve never seen a single episode of “Game Of Thrones,” I’ve seen all of “Riverdale” so far. That’s right, the dark Archie Comics adaptation is my jam, and the title town is my Westeros, which means I can’t wait for the second season. I’d definitely wager that some of our readers are (secret) fans of the show too.

Spoilers ahead if you’re still catching up, but at the end of first season, Archie’s dad, played by a weathered Luke Perry, was left with a bullet in the gut.

Coming as a surprise to no one, CW’s dark, “Twin Peaks”-esque Archie reboot “Riverdale” has been picked up for a second season. While not posting incredible ratings, the series has received good reviews and is slowly building its audience, with gains in DVR and online streaming viewership. However, even with modest ratings, there has already been plenty of talk of a new season.

Over the weekend weekend, producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa spoke at Coast-to-Coast Comic-Con where he said the series would be dropping season two hints during the upcoming season finale.
