While filmmaker Michael Mann helped “Tokyo Vice” get on its feet and gave the show its cinematic grammar, the series was always the creation of writer/showrunner and Tony Award winner J.T. Rogers. Based on the memoir “Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan” by Jake Adelstein, that’s always been the gist and heart of the show: an American reporter in Japan on the crime beat and learning the ropes and the culture.

Michael Mann’s first directorial effort since 2015’s “Blackhat” comes to HBO Max this Thursday, April 7th, with the highly anticipated debut of “Tokyo Vice,” the loose adaptation of the memoir of the same name by Jake Adelstein. At first, the series seems like a perfect fit for the director of “Miami Vice,” “Collateral,” and “Public Enemies.” It’s another stylish venture that centers on morally questionable men and the women who find themselves both drawn to them and betrayed by them.

We recently reported that Tran Anh Hung (“Cyclo,” “The Scent Of Green Papaya”) has acquired the rights to The Beatles’ song “Norwegian Wood” for his adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s best-selling novel of the same name. And he’s already putting it to good use.

The first teaser for the upcoming film has landed, and while it offers only the barest of footage in its just thirty second plus runtime, what is there is quite lovely.

First Look: Tran Anh Hung’s Adaptation Of Haruki Murakami’s Coming-Of-Age Tale ‘Norwegian Wood’

Here is your first look at Tran Anh Hung’s adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s “Norwegian Wood,” starring Kenichi Matsuyama, Rinko Kikuchi and Kiko Mizuhara.

Murakami’s novel is told mainly through flashbacks to a ’60’s coming-of-tale, that centers on student Toru Watanabe (Matsuyama) and his relationship with two women: the beautiful but fragile Naoko, played by “Babel” actress Kikuchi, and lively, outgoing Midori (Mizuhara).

Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood was previously revealed to be scoring the film after an award-wining effort on Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood.” As was the case with that score being based on Greenwood’s Popcorn Superhet Receiver, the score for “Norwegian Wood” will be based on a composition called Dogwood which the musician recently wrote for the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Len Wiseman is set to helm a film adaptation of the graphic novel “Shrapnel” which he came across on a trip to a comic store.The film will center on a future where humans have colonized the solar system and formed a Solar Alliance to govern the planets with Venus, the last rebellious holdout, fighting back with the help of a self-exiled former Marine.

Here’s your first look at Chow Yun-Fat as the title character in Hu Mei’s biopic of Confucius, the famous Chinese philosopher. [First Showing]

Juan Antonio Bayona and Sergio Sanchez, the director-writer team behind the “The Orphanage,” are set to reteam for a project that will probably be Bayona’s second directorial feature. A spring 2010 start date is being eyed for photography on the film which, thus far, has only the mysterious description of being a “powerful story, based on true facts, which poses large technical challenges.” [Variety]

Rinko Kikuchi (“Babel,” “The Brothers Bloom”) is set to star Tran Anh Hung’s adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s “Norwegian Wood.” Kenichi Matsuyama will also be starring.

TIFF Review: Rian Johnson’s ‘The Brothers Bloom’

Everyone and their mom loved Rian Johnson’s debut feature “Brick.” The neo-noir starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt was such an exhilarating new voice in modern filmmaking so it was pretty damn hard not to notice it, but the screwbally-esque trailer for “The Brothers Bloom,” didn’t exactly grab us and the fact that Johnson went from very-indie budgeted “Brick,” to a cast of major Hollywood names (including Academy Award-winner Adrien Brody) had us more than a little worried (“Brick” fans should note: Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Nora Zehetner both make cameos near the beginning of the film).
