However, sometimes a collaboration occurs that you don’t see coming but will totally work in ways you could never imagine. You know, like Lil Nas X and Bily Ray Cyrus, for example. (Kidding.) And in filmmaking, you have a seemingly random collaboration between directors Rick Alverson and Lisandro Alonso.

It was with 2012’s ironically titled “The Comedy” that director Rick Alverson landed on the radar of many an indie-attuned critic, but he did so as a polarizing figure whose searing brand of anti-humor was alternately lauded as generation-defining and dismissed as drearily indulgent. With 2015’s “Entertainment,” however, the filmmaker managed to earn a fair few converts, leaving us curious as to what uncomfortable places Alverson’s challenging sensibilities could lead him to with his next film, “The Mountain.”

And so we come to the line reading of the year, and it is one syllable: Denis Lavant‘s merciless torturing of the word “art” in Rick Alverson‘s shimmeringly surreal “The Mountain.” Somewhere between a snarl and a spit-take, elongated almost beyond recognition, and accompanied by a full-body shimmy of spasmodic disgust, Lavant’s Jack hurls it at Tye Sheridan‘s somnolent Andy like a diarrheic pigeon dive-bombing a statue.
