Blumhouse’s ‘Fantasy Island’ Is (Somehow) Worse Than It Sounds [Review]

At risk of putting too fine a point on it, Blumhouse’s “Fantasy Island” is pretty much everything that’s wrong with contemporary commercial moviemaking. It’s a big-screen adaptation of a justly forgotten television show, “reimagined” for a contemporary audience by removing all but the barest skeleton of its inspiration and fleshing it out with the spare parts of other, unrelated properties. The original, seven-season ABC television series was a corny, soapy ‘80s prime-time drama (a product of the Aaron Spelling factory) about, well, an island where fantasies come true; this is what was called a “high concept,” apparently because you could understand it even if you were high.

‘Anvil!’ Director Sacha Gervasi Talks Directing Herve Villechaize Biopic

(Old, but new to us…) We guess we never did write up a story on, “My Dinner With Herve,” a biopic of the “Fantasy Island” little guy, Richardo Montalban sidekick Herve Villechaize that was announced in the trades last October (we swear we did, but search seems to refute that).

It’s being directed by our pal Sacha Gervasi, the director behind the excellent documentary, “Anvil! The Story of Anvil” that comes out this weekend in limited release (and you should see if if you live in NY/LA).

I Spit My Last Breath At Thee! Ricardo Montalban 1920-2009

Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most… human.”*

Weird, we were just watching the tail end of “Wrath of Khan” last night on TV cause it was on, and we shit you not, we were extolling the virtues of Ricardo Montalban’s performance in that “Star Trek” sequel (the only good film of the franchise).
