When you trace the filmmaking career of Todd Field, you start to see how the filmmaker has had just an incredible number of projects fall apart or just not come together. This is shown in his filmography, where there are huge gaps in his output. He seems to be one of the preeminent examples of a filmmaker who just doesn’t seem to land his original idea and then settles for something else, only to then see that resulting project be immensely beloved.

Alexi Murdoch Writing The Music To Sam Mendes Indie Drama ‘ ‘Away We Go’

While Sam Mendes just released his Oscar-nominated “Revolutionary Road,” in December, the prodigious filmmaker already has another film in the can called, “Away We Go,” starring John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph that we included in one of our Most Anticipated Films of 2009 lists.

Co-written by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida, based on the trailer released yesterday, many seem to be calling this a romantic comedy or lumping it in with the “hipster film” clique that includes ‘Eternal Sunshine’ and “The Darjeeling Limited,” but that seems like an incredibly shallow and superficial reading to us.

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Wins The Scripter Award

In more, and seemingly endless, news on the awards “Slumdog Millionaire” has been winning, the screenwriter for the film, Simon Beaufoy, took home the Scripter Award this season. He beat out the writers of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “The Reader,” “Revolutionary Road” and “Iron Man,” the latter of which marked the first time a comic book movie had ever been nominated.

In case you’re wondering, the Scripter only recognize the author of pre-existing and produced literary work-to-film adaptation.

The Playlist’s Oscar Predictions: Major Categories

Alright, everyone’s dropping their predictions for the Oscar nominations, so The Playlist is dropping ours. Some picks are probably predictable, but again, this is not a time to be original, if that’s how you perceive Oscar betting, we strongly encourage you to join our Oscar pool so we can rob you of the money you seem too naive to be entitled to.

But here’s always a surprise or two, not because the Academy is trying to be different then say the Globes, the Baftas or what have you (that’s naive thinking), but because it’s a group of some 6,000 people who do not vote together collectively or by committee and make decisions in advance.

Golden Globe Snubs 2009: ‘The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button,’ ‘Milk,’ & ‘Frost/Nixon’ Totally Shut Out

The 2009 Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globes aired last night and Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” cleaned up almost every motion picture award. The praise and credit for ‘Slumdog’ is well-deserved, but the domination was bound to leave other films leaving empty handed. So just in case you missed last-nights awesome live-blogging, here is the rundown on who was left out in the cold by those foreign assholes.

“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”
Nominated for five awards (tied with “Doubt” and “Frost/Nixon” for the most nods), the David Fincher-directed won a grand total of zero awards.

‘Slumdog’ Dominates The Golden Globes; Kate Winslet Nabs Both Acting Awards

Updated Recap: Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionire” was the big winner of the 66 Annual Golden Globes taking home four major awards including the coveted Best Picture and Best Director prizes. It’s nice to see something relatively small like a Fox Searchlight film blow all the majors out of the water. They’ve been doing a fantastic indie-major job for three years running now bringing little films that could like, “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Juno” to the big leagues.

We’re sort of posting this as excuse to say, has everyone noticed how absolutely radiant Kate Winslet has been on the press tour of “Revolutionary Road”? Maybe not so much in this video, but check any recent premiere photos when she’s all done up. She’s got a great tan, she looks super fit, it’s like she did her Hollywood colonic-thingy, health regime attack in anticipation of all the press she’d be doing for her husband Sam Mendes’ film, but either way, she looks gorgeous and sometimes its hard to argue with them 2-month pre-press Tinseltown fixer/uppers.

Award Season Watch: San Fran, Phoenix, San Diego And St. Louis Critics Laud Usual Suspects, Mostly ‘Slumdog Millionaire’

Can there be any doubt that “Slumdog Millionaire” has gone from the little movie that could to sure-fire Best Picture Oscar nominee? The film has taken another slab of critical awards.

More Crit awards from around the U.S. The Phoenix Film Critics Society have given Best Picture and Director to “Slumdog Millionaire” and Danny Boyle. Sean Penn’s “Milk” performance took Best Actor and Meryl Streep scored Best Actress for her ferocious performance in “Doubt.” [PFCS]

The San Diego Film Critics Awards have always given ‘Slumdog’ the Best Film prize, Best Foreign Film to “Let The Right One In,” and Best Original Screenplay to Tom McCarthy’s “The Visitor.” Kate Winslet finally wins an award for Best Actress in… not “Revolutionary Road,” but “The Reader.” Odd.

The Oscar Race: How A Flawed ‘Benjamin Button’ Will Fare

Is the Best Picture Oscar race really between “Milk” and “Slumdog Millionaire”? We’re kind of convinced it is, especially since finally seeing “The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button.” It’s bound to appeal to an older crowd, but it’s just too damn flawed for Best Picture in our minds. “Revolutionary Road” is solid, and we liked it better than “Milk,” but we’re not sure it’s got the legs or support, but if you have to count a third, it’s the one.

‘Revolutionary Road’ Is An Oscar Caliber Film, In Case You Were Wondering…

No time for a full review, but quickly: You’re probably not wondering about it now because this morning it received four Golden Globe nominations, but there was some tentative worry about the award merits of Sam Mendes’ “Revolutionary Road” a few weeks ago when the trades put out two very mixed reviews (one hating it with particular vigor).

To reiterate what Playlist member David Benjamin’s already wrote in his review, “Revolutionary Road” definitely is worthy of Oscar consideration and certainly will be part of the Academy pack come nomination announcement time January 22, 2009.

The Oscar Watch: L.A Film Critics Give ‘Wall-E’ Best Picture

The year is almost done and let’s face it, the late-game Oscar season isn’t going to change the race much. “Gran Torino” and “Defiance” have screened for press (and us) and while decent, the Best Picture category frame won’t change. Though it’s noted some people are in the tank for Clint Eastwood in the former film. He’s fine enough, but not an Oscar nom in our minds. That’s not saying we don’t think he won’t get nominated, he stands a chance cause of political sympathies, but its us saying, we’ve seen better.

‘Revolutionary Road’ Soundtrack Due December 23 Via Nonesuch

Thomas Newman‘s soundtrack to Sam Mendes’ “Revolutionary Road” starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio is due December 23, via Nonesuch records. The disc is mostly score by Newman (who also wrote the music to “Wall-E” and “Towelhead” this year), but features three tracks by The Ravens, The Orioles and The Ink Spots. Randall Poster in the music supervisor on this one and no doubt helped pick these three cuts. You can hear samples from the score right here.

The Final 7-8 For Oscars Best Picture Race?

Everyone’s talking about the how the Oscar Best Picture race is an eight-legged one. David Carr, the New York Time’s “Carpetbagger” (a man who is the Oscar intelligence for the Gray Lady, yet has admitted that he’s barely seen any of the films this year, “I’ve seen almost nothing. It’s like showing up at school when everyone’s four chapters ahead.” lol), says the list is looking like this: “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Frost/Nixon,” “Revolutionary Road,” “Milk,” “Doubt” and “The Reader.” He also says keep an eye out for Clint Eastwood’s “Gran Torino.”

Despite the Bagger’s ignorance, this final 7 or 8 does seem to be a general consensus, plus “The Dark Knight” of course.

First Positive ‘Reader’ Review Trickles In

Not much, but it should be a start. FoxNews (?!) has a little information about upcoming Oscarbait picture “The Reader” starring the always interesting Kate Winslet. Though details are sketchy, they seemed to really dig it. We’re not sure that FoxNews will ever become an authority on any film but for now we’ll take what we can get.

Based on the much-acclaimed novel by Bernard Schlink and helmed by director Stephen Daldry (The Hours, Billy Elliot) ‘Reader’ is one of two films coming out this fall that stars Winslet in a role that should generate some Oscar buzz.

Leonardo DiCaprio Has Good Taste In Movies, Talks ‘Revolutionary Road’

It’s easy to dog Leonardo DiCaprio. His career started out on such a high note, “This Boy’s Life,” and “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (Oscar nom), and then devolved into a lot of unmentionable crap. He earns points for working with Marty Scorsese, but he never really felt at home in any of those films until, “The Departed.”

In our minds, he’s hit his stride, he was very solid in Ridley Scott’s so-so “Body of Lies,” (and finally felt like a man playing man’s roles instead of a young adult doing so), and he seems great in “Revolutionary Road” (we said Leo was “outstanding“)

Maybe working with Scorsese is paying off because DiCaprio’s taste is a lot higher-minded than we would have thought for him.

After mixed response to his often monotonous, ultra-specific Gulf War flick “Jarhead”, critics and fans alike called on Sam Mendes to return to what he did best in “American Beauty” – profiling suburban dystopia and the price of pursuing the American dream. Easier said than done. And yet Mendes has done exactly that in adapting Richard Yates’ 1961 classic.

Better ‘Revolutionary Road’ Reviews

This morning two trades had very opposing feelings. But now, more positive reviews pouring in of Sam Mendes’ “Revolutionary Road.”

Here’s Anne Thompson’s thoughts, another Variety writer and you can put this one in the “in favor of” column. Notice the love for Michael Shannon who seems to be on-tap for a Best Supporting nomination.

“[The film] is strictly an art-house play–and should score with the Academy. Mendes takes a more realistic and less stylized approach to this dysfunctional suburban family than he did on the Oscar-winning ‘American Beauty.’ The entire ensemble is first-rate: Shannon got a rousing round of applause at my screening for his role as the insane truth-teller who cuts through all the crap.
