In an industry that often takes an all-or-nothing-at-all approach to film financing, horror remains the little engine that could, and plenty of smaller horror films outperformed both critically and at the box office.

Then again, that’s a true statement for pretty much every year. What makes 2022 such a fascinating year for horror is the sheer breadth of titles that were released to audiences.

But when I spoke to him about a week ago, and when, more importantly, he wrote “Resurrection”— a scorching new psychological horror/thriller—he definitely didn’t have kids. His wife was due to give birth, and he was getting in as many interviews as he could before his baby arrived.

Of course, these are all compliments for a searing psychological dramatic thriller that’s horrifying, and, yes, tips into the horror genre a little bit, but also remains unpredictable in its madness. Starring an outstanding Rebecca Hall and Tim Roth in two of the best performances of the year, “Resurrection” is directed by Andrew Semans (“Nancy, Please,” 2012), and is a bruising look at abusive relationships, sadism, gaslighting, control and lack thereof, the primal fears of parenthood and so much more.

While films such as “Lightyear” and “Jurassic World Dominion” have failed to successfully stick the landing (be it critically or commercially), there’s been plenty to seek out in smaller, independent scenes. This remains largely true for July, where, despite films such as “Thor: Love and Thunder,” there are still plenty of more character-driven films worthy of seeking out — though “Nope” will likely make the argument for both being true for the same film.

Demonstrating her mainstream appeal through her highly critically and commercially successful collaboration with Christopher Nolan in the 2006 film “The Prestige,” Hall has since become a stalwart of the Sundance Film Festival, having equally exhibited an inclination towards its more independently spirited projects. In the infancy of this decade alone, Hall has appeared in “The Night House” and has helmed her first directorial outing in “Passing,” both of which had their premieres at Sundance to high acclaim.

Summer’s here and the time is right, for dancing in the street. They’re dancing in Chicago (dancing in the street), down in New Orleans (dancing in the street). In New York City (dancing in the street). All we need is music, sweet music, there’ll be music everywhere. There’ll be swingin’ and swayin’ and records playing, dancing in the street. Oh, it doesn’t matter what you wear.

However, as anchored by its two fiercely committed and convincing lead performances (Rebecca Hall and Tim Roth), a menacingly disquieting tone, and a frightening ambiguity about a disintegrating mental state, “Resurrection” is a deeply distressing and compelling drama that will shock and shake you to your core.

If COVID has taught us anything outside revealing the darkest side of humanity, it’s that time is definitely a construct. Many are still trying to catch up on various titles they might have missed over the last twelve months — most, no doubt, out of enjoyment, but, always some out of perceived awards’ season obligation, let’s be real.

The festival has released a batch of first-look images (see below) for the upcoming slate of festival entries including films such as “Resurrection,” “Honk For Jesus, Save Your Soul,” and “Call Jane.” All three projects will have their World Premiere at Sundance alongside many other feature films and documentaries.

For the first time in recent memory, acquisition films are dominating the proceedings. Sure, there are a few A24 and Amazon Studios films here and there, but for the most part, the mini-majors decided to pass on a hybrid in-person and virtual festival (for a variety of reasons). In many ways, that may benefit festival-goers who are in for more “unseen” surprises than usual.
