It’s been a rough year. With the recession ending for some people (not us!), the divisions caused by inane topics like the mosque in downtown Manhattan and the specter of doom hanging over us in the shape of the GOP’s return to power, audiences have to feel pummeled by DEADLY SERIOUS ISSUES. What better time for a “Jackass” movie to come along? The opening number reflects the fact that demand probably wasn’t that much higher than for previous installments – the 3D surcharge plus the huge Friday numbers that trailed off, suggest as much.

In Theaters: ‘Red,’ ‘Jackass 3D,’ ‘Hereafter’

A quiet week with only two films opening in wide release, and strangely, not a horror film in sight as we approach Halloween. First up is the Bruce Willis old-guys-and-guns vehicle “Red,” which is basically a slightly classier version of August’s “The Expendables” and about as good. Next up is “Jackass 3D,” the latest entry in the venerable franchise, which should take the top spot at the box office this weekend, especially with the inflated 3D ticket prices.

Review: ‘Red’ Is Pretty Much A More Watchable ‘Expendables’ With A Better Cast (But Still Disappointing)

As you might have guessed from our coverage leading up to the film’s release, we were impressed with the trailers for “Red” and were holding out some hope that in a year populated with rag-tag-crew films like “The Losers,” “The A-Team” and “The Expendables” that disappointed, this would be the film that would be late-inning saving grace. Sadly, this is not the case. Based on the DC Comic and directed by Robert Schwentke, “Red” is essentially a more watchable version of “The Expendables” with a better cast, but plagued with the same narrative and tonal problems of Sylvester Stallone’s steroid and testosterone-heavy film.

While there’s plenty of viral internet comedy shows out there competing for your procrastination time, none of them have managed to be as consistently funny and generally excellent as Funny or Die’s “Between Two Ferns.” The world’s second most awkward talk show (behind “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno”), features “The Hangover” star Zach Galifianakis (and occasionally his more clean-shaven, fictional brother Seth) interviewing a host of celebrities that have included Jon Hamm, Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron, Ben Stiller, Steve Carell and, most recently, Sean Penn, while sitting between the titular plants.

International ‘Red’ Trailer Looks Like The Summer Action Movie Of This Fall

“The Losers,” “The A-Team” and “The Expendables” (despite its mind boggling success) didn’t do it for us, but it looks like Robert Schwentke’s “Red” will fill the dumb fun action slot and be a welcome break from seriousness of this fall’s awards season.

The international trailer for the Robert Schwentke-directed adaptation of the DC/Wildstorm comic has arrived, and it looks like total, self-deprecating fun. The film follows Frank Moses (Bruce Willis), a retired black-ops CIA agent who finds that his former bosses are trying to kill him.

Robert Schwentke To Shoot 60-Second Epilogue For ‘Red’ With Bruce Willis & John Malkovich

Pretty much confirming that Summit that has a lot faith in the upcoming and buzzed about adaptation of the DC/Wildstorm comic “Red,” they’ve sent director Robert Schewentke and stars Bruce Willis and John Malkovich out to shoot one more scene that might tagged onto the end of the movie (our guess is that it’ll be an post-credits bonus scene). The film is still being fine tuned so it may not end up in the final cut at all.

Yeah, we never thought this one would fly onto our radars the way that it has, but you can thank the impressive trailers for that. Yeah, we’re as surprised as you are, but we are really digging the vibe of the upcoming adaptation of Warren Ellis’ comic book “Red.”

The film follows Frank Moses (Bruce Willis), a retired black-ops CIA agent who finds that his former bosses are trying to kill him. Scrambling to survive and to protect the woman he loves (Mary Louise-Parker), he reassembles his old team (Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich, who is at his free-wheeling eccentric best) for the inevitable one last job…

Directed by Robert Schwentke and rounded out by Brian Cox, Karl Urban, Richard Dreyfuss, Ernest Borgnine and Julian McMahon, the film is light on its toes, and seems to manage the balance of comedy and action that similarly themed misfires like “The Losers” and “The A-Team” failed to achieve earlier this year.

Update: Karl Urban confirmed at ComicCon that he’s been offered the role. “We’ve been having discussions. We’re working on it,” he said.

The Hollywood star-making machine can act like a runaway train sometimes. It’s why, years after their respective flops, people like Jude Law and Ben Affleck are still being treated like headliners. For whatever reason, this year has seen something of a trend in action movies; older action heroes who are betrayed and forced to reunite to get their revenge. We’ve already had “The Losers” and “The A-Team” this year to negligible results, and “The Expendables” looks to continue the theme. A trailer for Robert Schwentke’s “Red” has just come online over at Yahoo, and despite hitting a good six months after the rest of them, it looks like it’s got the potential to be far more enjoyable than any of the others.

Lance Bangs And Spike Jonze Reunite For AIDS Documentary ‘The Lazarus Effect’

Filmmaker Spike Jonze and documentarian Lance Bangs have evidently reunited for a documentary on the AIDS epidemic in Africa titled “The Lazarus Effect,” funded by Bono and Bobby Shriver’s (Red) initiative.

The 30-minute film follows the stories of four HIV+ sufferers in Zambia as they go through the transformative life-saving antiretroviral medicine, which costs a mere 40 cents a day but helps bring sufferers of the disease back to life. The feature was shot last year on three separate trips to Africa by Bangs, adamant on letting “the people speak for themselves, rather than have a lot of earnest Western talking heads.” Bangs is directing the picture with Jonze only executive producing due to his commitment to “Where The Wild Things Are.”

“I had lost friends and teachers to Aids and Aids-related illnesses, but at least in the West the drugs are available,” Bangs explained.

Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich; Actor Confirms ‘Spider-Man’ Role; Replaces John C. Reilly In ‘Red’

The never-knowingly-understated John Malkovich has confirmed the rumor that’s been floating around Hollywood for most of the holiday season – he will indeed take on the villainous role of The Vulture in “Spider-Man 4,” even as the film goes into an extended production hiatus. Nikki Finke said as much last week, but Malkovich was on an Italian sports show, of all things, and was asked about the rumors.

He responded “that he’s waiting for the final script to be sent to him, and that the movie has been delayed.

Julian McMahon (“Fantastic Four” films), Ernest Borgnine (famous for still being alive at 314-years-of-age) Richard Dreyfuss and Brian Cox are all set to star in the all-star cast of “Red,” a D.C. comics film that we probably would just shrug our shoulders at if it weren’t for the fact that, so far, the picture has somehow attracted the likes of Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John C. Reilly and Mary Louise Parker.

— We’ve been a little ho-hum on the Bruce Willis/Morgan Freeman spy thriller “Red,” an adaptation of Warren Ellis’ comic book directed by Robert Schwentke (“The Time Traveller’s Wife”), but the recent news that Helen Mirren was stepping on-board was intriguing. Now John C. Reilly and Mary-Louise Parker, fine actors both, have joined the cast, the former playing a paranoid CIA agent, the latter playing the love interest, a federal pension worker, and we’re more than a little intrigued, it’s an unusually high-calibre cast for an action-thriller.

— We took “The Hangover” breakout star Zach Galifianakis to task yesterday for signing on to a ton of rather generic sounding comedies, and a commenter quite rightly pointed out he’s made some interesting choices too, like the upcoming Ryan Fleck/Anna Boden project “It’s Kind of A Funny Story.” Well, the prosecution would like to present Exhibit D: the hirsute comic may voice the role of Humpty Dumpty in the “Shrek” prequel/spin off “Puss in Boots.” Galifianakis will join Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek in the cast of the movie, which will open exactly two years from now.

— It’s been a while since we had an entry in the ‘college reunion’ sub-genre, that was briefly so popular after the success of “The Big Chill.” It looks like it’s making a comeback now, though, in the shape of “The Romantics,” written and directed by “Lonesome Jim” producer Galt Niederhoffer, who adapted it from her own novel. Katie Holmes takes the lead (replacing Liv Tyler, who originally had the part), fronting a pretty good cast also featuring Anna Paquin, Josh Duhamel, Malin Akerman, Elijah Wood, Adam Brody and Jeremy Strong, in a story revolving around eight college friends who reunite in their 20s for a wedding.

Vanessa Hudgens is enthused to appear in Zack Snyder’s upcoming fantastical-sounding, “Sucker Punch” film. “I’m very excited, I’m such a big fan of ‘300.’ And it’s a bunch of girls in this mental institution and actually takes place in a brothel in the ’50s. So it’s crazy.” Did Hudgens mean ‘alternatively’ or has she just dropped a major spoiler? Variety also yesterday reported that Carla Gugino’s character plays a nurse (opposed to THR who reported “female figure”) in the insane asylum who becomes a madam at a brothel in the film’s alternate reality.
