Kevin Smith Hopes To Have ‘Red State’ Ready For Sundance, Offers More Details About The Film

Kevin Smith has done pretty admirably so far in keeping things mum surrounding his upcoming horror flick “Red State.” But we suppose it was only a matter of time before he hit Twitter to answer questions about the film as well as answer a world of questions recently about his “Christploitation” flick.

The director revealed that the film will come in at a very succinct “80 or 85 mins, when all’s said & done.” He’s been shooting the film more or less in chronological order saying, “We’re at around 52 minutes right now, with 8 days left to shoot.” He hopes to show the film to the entire cast and crew at the wrap party, and it looks like he wants it out there making the festival rounds quickly.

First Look At Kevin Smith’s Horror Film ‘Red State’

Kevin Smith has been surprisingly quiet lately, but that’s probably because he’s in the midst of shooting his horror film, “Red State.” However, he recently hit Twitter to give fans a first look at the film and it’s tastefully enigmatic.

Details on the film have mostly been kept under wraps, but it follows a group of kids who encounter a crazed preacher (based on Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church) who gives a whole new meaning to the term “extreme fundamentalism.” And the picture above, seemingly taken from behind the preacher as he plays to his congregation, is an interesting pique.

John Goodman Joins Kevin Smith’s ‘Red State’

John Goodman has joined Kevin Smith’s horror flick of sorts, “Red State.”

Goodman rounds out an already extensive cast that includes Kevin Pollack, Michael Parks, Kyle Gallner, Melissa Leo, Dermot Mulroney, Michael Angarano and Steven Root. Earlier in the year Smith said he would be casting “recognizable unknowns” and he seems to be keeping to that plan. The casting also marks a reunion of sorts for Goodman and Leo, who made a powerful pair on the first season of “Treme.”

The logline of the film — A group of kids encounters a crazed preacher (based on Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church) who gives a whole new meaning to the term “extreme fundamentalism” — is promising and at least it will find Smith challenging his skills in a new genre, and hopefully reversing the rut of mediocrity that has marked his last few films.

Kevin Pollack May Appear In Kevin Smith’s ‘Red State’

Another red-blooded soul is seemingly en route to join Kevin Smith’s upcoming political horror film “Red State.” Slash Film dropped the news that Kevin Pollack, who appeared in Smith’s much-maligned “Cop Out,” has been offered a role in the helmer’s new film. Pollack confirmed that he received the offer on his Twitter account, but he did not elaborate on whether he had accepted it. We have little doubt in this regard, since Pollack is a respected character actor and would benefit from joining Smith’s new film, which has amassed quite an impressive cast in the last few months.

Kevin Smith’s ‘Red State’ Gets A Logline

The normally chatty Kevin Smith has uncharacteristically been keeping quiet (at least for now) as his newest project, “Red State,” gears up for production.

Not much has been known about the project until now except that it’s a horror film that’s loosely based on nutjob preacher Fred Phelps. Well, Shock ‘Til You Drop has acquired a logline that reveals slightly more (sort of) but keeps things mysterious:

A group of kids encounters a crazed preacher (based on Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church) who gives a whole new meaning to the term “extreme fundamentalism.”

Frankly, we’re a little surprised that the usually very vocal (and totally obnoxious) Fred Phelps hasn’t caught wind of this yet; or maybe he’ll just show up with pickets in tow on Kevin Smith’s set.

Cast For Kevin Smith’s Horror Film ‘Red State’ Begins Taking Shape With Dermot Mulroney, Stephen Root, Michael Angarano & More

Apparently when Kevin Smith said his cast for “Red State” would be filled out by “recognizable unknowns,” he meant that relative only to the world-beating thespians he’s been working with of late such as Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan, Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks.

The Wrap are now reporting that Dermot Mulroney (“My Best Friend’s Wedding”), Michael Angarano (Soderbergh’s upcoming “Haywire”), Kyle Gallner (“Jennifer’s Body”) and Stephen Root (“No Country For Old Men,” “Office Space”) are all in talks to join the religiously-themed horror film with Oscar-nominated actress Melissa Leo (“Frozen River”) also circling.

Living up to his promise to cast “recognizable unknowns” for his upcoming film “Red State,” Kevin Smith announced at Comic-Con that Michael Parks has signed on for the film.

Parks is a veteran of the Tarantino/Rodriguez universe having played Texas Ranger Earl McGraw in “From Dusk Til Dawn,” “Kill Bill Vol. 1,” “Death Proof” and “Planet Terror.” It’s probably safe to say that Parks has the lead role in “Red State,” a horror film film (kind of) about which little is known other than it is loosely based on Fred Phelps, the reverend of the hateful Westboro Baptist Church.

Kevin Smith’s ‘Red State’ To Have “Recognizable Unknowns”; Smith Apparently Turned Down A-List Talent

Collider recently sat down with Kevin Smith to talk about the release of “Cop Out” on DVD, but both most have realized that there’s nothing really to say about that throw-away film, so they opted to talk about future projects “Red State” and “Hit Somebody.” Smith just had a previous interview where he laid down some info, and here he spills some more beans, specifically about “Red State.”

Smith commented on the casting for “Red State,” claiming he does want unknowns but not totally unrecognizable people either “…it’s a weird kind of in between neither place that I’m reaching for… You can go to ‘Law and Order’ and grab anybody from the cast and they’ve done five or six episodes and shit but you’d still recognize them..” So there’s definitely still hope in casting “American Pie” vet Eddie Kaye Thomas then, right?

Kevin Smith’s ‘Red State’ Horror Shooting In August? Still Plans To Use Unknowns

Last we heard from Kevin Smith, he was just getting over his weightgate Southwest Air scandal and then alienating all his fanboy devotees by suggesting that press screenings for his films should be disallowed because critics had essentially roasted his disastrous new picture, “Cop Out” (the same critics who had basically given him a career with “Clerks” back in the day).

All and all, February 2010 was a pretty bad month for Smith — he also tested patience by suggesting a fan-financing plan to sire his dream project “Red State” via a donation website of some kind — and he may or may not have learned that Twitter might not be his best outlet when promoting a movie (that month he was so insufferable, we basically unfollowed and ahhhh’d at the sense of peace and quiet).

Given the difficulty the project has had finding funding, and the howls that ensued when writer/director Kevin Smith suggested a fan-based donation system to get the film off the ground, we never expected that “Red State” would not only get financing, but become the next project on the director’s plate.

/Film have put together the pieces from Kevin Smith’s tweets which as of February 17th, stated that, “the only money it’ll require from [fans] will be at the box office,” seemed to indicate the the film was closer to happening than previously revealed.

That didn’t take long. On Friday, news about director Kevin Smith’s idea to fan-finance his dream project “Red State” via a donation website of some kind spread like wildfire around the internet.

In an interview with CINSSU, the director said, “We’re kind of creating this website. We’re seeing if it works to set up and collect donations. But it became a weird tax nightmare, though…It sounded like such an easy thing online…but now there’s lots of checks and balances to make sure we can do it, but if that’s the case, I would be into it, and I’ll match it.

Back in September of last year, we reported that Kevin Smith would be making his hockey movie next if he didn’t get the necessary funding in order to move ahead with his long-in-the-works horror movie, “Red State.” This sentiment hasn’t changed, as Smith will begin working on the hockey film “Hit Somebody” (named after a wry Warren Zevon song) later this year.

However, luckily, thanks to the suggestion of a fan via Twitter, Smith has begun developing a new method for gathering otherwise non-existent funds for “Red State” in the form of an online donation website.

Kevin Smith Is Cool With Bruce Willis, Tries To Apologize To Harvey Weinstein

Kevin Smith sounds pretty contrite in this new interview with Vulture backing down from a lot of comments he made lately about Bruce Willis (a “dick,” undirectable”) at a wrap party for the action comedy, “A Couple of Dicks” and Harvey Weinstein. Or at least with Bruce Willis he basically says any “dick” comments were either fabricated or taken out of context.

Let’s start with Willis.

Hot on the heels of a 24-hour-tweet-a-thon (though this interview was likely conducted prior) and probably having to change the title of his action comedy, “A Couple Of Dicks” (again), Kevin Smith has discussed the possibilities and chances of reviving his horror project, “Red State.”

Presumed dead a few months ago, Smith is saying the project might be next. Maybe.

The director would like to show the script to actors, but would rather get funding in places before he gets his and others hopes for.
