The mind of a killer, their disturbing motivations, their often perverse behavior and their unknownable, sociopathic thinking is not unlike our obsession with the great white shark: culture is always fixated on apex killers and the more mysterious and impossible to peg, the more fanatical we are about their own preoccupations and psychotic neuroses.

Ok, so we’re a bit late, but June is here and almost over (obviously) which means the mid-way point of the year has arrived.

So, checking into the six, almost seven month mark of 2010, where do we stand?

In pretty good shape. While the year has delivered a pitiful summer so far and pretty tepid mainstream prospects, as usual, the indie and foreign markets have dug deeper to give us something much more enriching.

A sprawling, richly textured three-part crime opus, originally broadcast on British television, The “Red Riding” trilogy is now coming to an incredibly arty art-house theater somewhere near you. If you live in New York and are strong willed, the Manhattan IFC Theater is showing the whole thing in one big gulp. We suggest seeing it this way. It’s how we saw it. (We sat through the first two parts uninterrupted. When we went outside to get candy in-between the second and third parts, the shocked publicist said, “You stayed there the whole time?”).

Why even bother writing an In Theaters piece this week? Because this is The Playlist and dammit if we aren’t committed to our cause! Superbowl Sunday is this week, so the day’s grosses will be down, especially among males, which bodes well for “Dear John.” But can it really challenge “Avatar,” which has been the top movie for well over a month now? Time will tell, but a change could really do us good in this dry season.

Last week we fell behind when the trailer and poster for IFC’s “Red Riding” Trilogy — a triptych of films that center around the manhunt for the “Yorkshire Ripper,” a serial killer who terrorized northwest England in the 1970s and ’80s — was released. Well, now we have a good excuse to catch up and post them.

Written by Tony Grisoni (Terry Gilliam collaborator on “Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas” and the upcoming ‘Quixote’ re-do), and adapted from novels by David Peace, the trio of films were directed by Julian Jarrold (“Brideshead Revisited”), James Marsh (“Man on Wire”), and Anand Tucker (“Shopgirl”) and they sound like a pretty epic event (Ridley Scott apparently already wants to remake them).

Now that the fall Award season films have all been accounted for at least promotionally (we’ve seen the trailers, etc.) studios are starting to think ahead to the dreck, filler films they have ready to dump release at the beginning of the year dumping ground season.

Hence the arrival of the poster and trailer for “Leap Year,” a romantic comedy starring two actors we like, Amy Adams and Matthew Goode.

However, as you might expect, it looks excruciating, panders to every rom-com cliche in the book and even stoops so low to prey on the female insecurity of getting married and finding a man before a certain age.

Sometimes, words fail us.

A little while back, we caught, and loved, “Red Riding,” the trilogy of crime thrillers made for Channel 4 in the UK, which will be released theatrically in the US next month through IFC. You can find our original review here, but it was pretty much a flat rave – the films are dense, impossibly dark, beautifully made and brilliantly acted. Now, according to Variety, Ridley Scott and his “American Gangster” scribe Steven Zaillan are reteaming to remake the original trilogy.

Over the weekend, the Telluride Film Festival has seen the U.S. premiere of the “Red Riding” Trilogy, made up of Julian Jarrold’s “1974,” James Marsh’s “1980” and Anand Tucker’s “1983.” We caught up with the films a little while back, and we’re happy to report that the whole endeavor marks easily one of the cinematic highlights of the year.

Adapted from the novels by David Peace (whose “The Damned United” has also recently been adapted for the screen, and will screen at Toronto), “Red Riding” is a James Ellroy-like crime epic set in the Yorkshire region of Northern England, examining police corruption and the very darkest aspects of human nature.
