Writer/director Zack Snyder always has ambitious plans for his movies, and when it comes to his brand new science-fiction space opera series “Rebel Moon,” the filmmaker’s thinking isn’t veering far off from the audacious. Just one day before the second installment’s release, “Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver,” Snyder has said that he has plans for up to six ‘Rebel Moon’ movies.

In a recent interview with RadioTimes.com, Snyder opened up about the status of the series and where he would like it to head next.

Zack Snyder’s fantasy sci-fi epic “Rebel Moon,” once a “Star Wars” pitch reconfigured to be an original project, wasn’t exactly well-received upon its release last December (read our review). Trounced by critics, the film has a dismal 21% Rotten Tomatoes score, and even the generally more lenient audience score is negative. Still, the show must go on as the sequel, ‘The Scargiver,’ is already in the can and ready for imminent release.

Filmmaker Zack Snyder has been stretching his franchise wings at Netflix in recent years with the “Army of The Dead” series and his current “Rebel Moon” space opera. However, the former zombie actioner seemingly got a warmer reception than the more recent two-part sci-fi fantasy pic loosely inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s “The Seven Samurai,” repurposed from a “Star Wars” pitch. While speaking with Empire, the director briefly commented on the disastrous critical response to the first “Rebel Moon” film (21% score on Rotten Tomatoes), asserting that his movies “for whatever reason” have become “polarizing” to critics and audiences.

Netflix did its annual blitz, a big dog and pony show for the press last night, revealing its entire film slate for 2024.  Most of the heavy hitters you already know, like Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon: Part 2 – The Scargiver,” which we already know, comes out in April, or “Beverley Hills Cop: Axel Foley,” or John Ridley’s “Shirley,” or Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man,” recently announced for a June release, but there’s plenty of surprises and new confirmations too.

Our review wasn’t pretty blunt about it, too, calling it “lifeless and superficial,” but it’s still fascinating that Netflix went all in on it, and a sequel, “Rebel Moon: The Scargiver,” is coming in April 2024 (read our review here; check out our 2024 blockbuster preview here).

It’s a generous move given that “A Child Of Fire, the first installment in his space opera was hit with scathing reviews when it debuted earlier this month (read our review), but one supposes, Snyder is no grinch, doesn’t mind and wants to keep the drum beating for his new series (it’s on our list of the 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2024, so let’s hope the ‘Scargiver’ is much better.

Zack Snyder’s forthcoming sci-fi space opera “Rebel Moon” is a project he’s been kicking around for over ten years. It started out as an R-rated “Star Wars” film idea in 2012 that he pitched to Kathleen Kennedy. “I thought that “Star Wars” was in a vulnerable state, so I thought I had a chance,” Snyder said in a recent THR profile. It then morphed into a “”Game of Thrones” in space” television series idea until Snyder eventually shaped it into the two-part Netflix epic it is now.
