Parents gather around the tatami, the mat where one practices the martial art of judo. On the mat, children wrestle and grunt, tugging at each other with giddy joy. Rachel (Virginie Efira) is one of the adults standing by the windows that frame the tatami as if it’s a gallery, her eyes moving swiftly from the little limbs flying up and down to the prepared hands of those around her. Mothers and fathers carry biscuits, fruits and sandwiches.

The French actor, director, and producer Rebecca Zlotowski made a splash in 2016 with the World War II film “Planetarium,” starring Lily Rose and Natalie Portman. Although it’s been a few years between that film and her follow up, “An Easy Girl,” Zlotowski has been very busy. She directed episodes of “Savages” on Canal +, co-directed “J’irai où tu iras” and started the 5050×2020 movement, a campaign for gender parity at the Cannes Film Festival.

Narrative in cinema is often conventional — the three acts, the heroes’ journey, the need for redemption — so much so that ambiguity is often welcomed with open arms. Narrative is often so spoon-fed to us, many audiences crave something more equivocal. Or at least that’s what we tell ourselves, because this theory is severely tested in “Planetarium,” an elusive drama tethered to so little, it makes us long for the traditional and tangible.

In “Grand Central,” Rebecca Zlotowski‘s nuclear melodrama starring Lea Seydoux and Tahar Rahim, the director made an impression with her striking visuals and careful handle on tone. Now Natalie Portman has signed up to star in the follow-up, “Planetarium,” with Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne producing.

The ensemble is rounded out by Lily-Rose Depp, Emmanuel Salinger, Amira Casar, Pierre Salvadori, and Louis Garrel, with the intriguing premise of the movie following two American sisters in 1930s Paris whose practice as supernatural mediums finds them crossing paths with a film producer.
