So it’s like “Rocky” with Hugh Jackman as the coach to the heroic robot fighter?

Here’s your first look at “Real Steel” the new Jackman project that started shooting today (Monday, June 14). Directed by Shawn Levy, we assume this must be some kind of quantum leap project for the director of “Date Night” and the new “Pink Panther” with Steve Martin, but then again, those “Night at the Museum” films do have their effects and big set pieces (confession, this writer has never seen one)

The project is a boxing drama set in the near-future where 2,000-pound robots that look like humans do battle.

Hope Davis, James Rebhorn & Olga Fonda Join Shawn Levy’s ‘Real Steel’

Hope Davis, James Rebhorn and Olga Fonda have joined the cast of Shawn Levy’s upcoming sci-fi actioner, “Real Steel.”

Set in a futuristic world where the sport of boxing is outlawed on account of its violence and replaced by gladiatorial robots, the film follows a former boxer and down-on-his-luck promoter as he gets one last shot at a comeback, teaming up with his long-lost son to train the perfect contender.

The semi-interesting tale is based on Richard Matheson’s short story “Steel” (also adapted into a ‘Twilight Zone’ episode starring Lee Marvin in the lead role), but now with the added father-son twist it may have a somewhat over-killing emotional core.

The poster for “Carlos,” Olivier Assayas’ epic biopic on famed terrorist Carlos The Jackal has landed and it’s…..okay. It doesn’t change our anticipation for the film, which is fairly high. “Carlos” will premiere at Cannes in a little over a week in its full five-and-a-half-hour cut. The full version will hit Sundance Channel in a mini-series format (as it’s originally intended) and a shorter theatrical cut will make the arthouse rounds later this year.

Jason Statham has joined the thriller “Safe” that is set to be directed by Boaz Yakin.

Emile Hirsch Joins Olivia Thirlby For ‘The Darkest Hour’

Emile Hirsch will join Olivia Thirlby, in “The Darkest Hour,” who we previously reported had signed on to star in the Timur Bekmambetov-produced film.

The film was originally scripted by Black List favorite Joshua Zetumer who worked on “Bourne 4,” and “is set in Moscow and follows a group of Americans traveling in the city when an alien invasion occurs. Thirlby plays a trust fund girl trying to survive the attack who teams up with others to try to defeat the invaders.” Variety reports the current draft is the work of writers Les Bohem (“The Alamo” and the upcoming “Real Steel” with Hugh Jackman) and Jon Spaihts (Black List-favorite “Passengers”).

Hugh Jackman’s ‘Avon Man’ Comedy Comes Next; Shoots In April

Last summer it was reported that Hugh Jackman would star in “Avon Man” for 20th Century Fox, a project written by “Hitch” screenwriter Kevin Bisch.

Evidently, that’s true and now the film has found a director in “Enchanted” helmer Kevin Lima and the comedy will begin shooting this April in Atlanta according to Production Weekly.

What does this mean for Antoine Fuqua’s “Prisoners,” set to star Jackman that was already delayed, that still has a release date of October 22, 2010 penciled in over at Box-Office Mojo?

Carrie Bradshaw’s also gone a bit robo-bling in the new poster for the looming “Sex and the City 2,” which you can see here. The plot’s being kept under wraps, as if anyone gives a shit after the first one, but it’ll see Penelope Cruz and Alice Eve (“Crossing Over”) joining the cast, along with a cameo from Liza Minnelli.
