The relationship between horror production shingle Blumhouse and Prime Video seems like a big win-win for everyone. Prime Video gets content, Blumhouse gets paid, and the company, run by the canny Jason Blum, uses this deal wisely, often using it as an intelligent way to give voice to BIPOC and female filmmakers.

They’ve already done their “Welcome To the Blumhouse” series, which did precisely that—horror movies told by many people of color and female writers/directors—and the trend seems to continue with their latest film, the slasher comedy, “Totally Killer.”

Starring “Mad Men” actress Kiernan Shipka, “Totally Killer” centers on an infamous “Sweet Sixteen Killer” who returns 35 years after his first murder spree to claim another victim.

We know Randall Park as a pretty fine comedian; he was first known for the ABC sitcom “Fresh Off The Boat,” but since he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” he’s since shown up in “WandaVision,” ‘Quantumania,’ and seems like he’ll continue as a utility player in that universe. But he’s also turned filmmaker with his directorial debut, the comedic drama “Shortcomings,” which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

“Shortcomings” begins with a magic trick of a scene: we see an emotional Asian American audience applaud when the end credits of a film (modeled clearly on “Crazy Rich Asians”) start rolling at an Asian American film festival. Outside the screening, more Asian Americans celebrate the significance of the moment — an Asian American-led romantic comedy becoming a blockbuster hit. Ben (Justin H. Min), a struggling filmmaker and a born contrarian, seems appalled by the fuss around what he claims is a “garish mainstream rom-com that glorifies a capitalistic fantasy.” His girlfriend Miko (Ally Maki), who works for the festival, doesn’t agree, arguing that the film is a “game-changer” because its success will open the floodgates for more “cool or artsy or whatever” Asian American films to be greenlit in Hollywood.

Missing your local Blockbuster? Netflix may have the cure with their new series, appropriately titled “Blockbuster.” The project centers around the last location of this once prolific company. While fictional, its basic premise has roots in reality as a lone Oregon store remains open.

Randall Park stars as the ambitious movie lover committed to keeping his Blockbuster dream alive. The actor stood out in 2021’s “WandaVision” and can be heard in the upcoming animated series “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai.” He’s joined by Melissa Fumero — notable in her own right for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” This time, she’s portraying a woman whose life took a very different path—the character’s past journey from Harvard to small-town retail promises some surprises along the way.

Today, it was announced that Amazon Studios and Blumhouse have teamed up for a new hybrid horror movie that will star Kiernan Shipka (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina“), Olivia Holt (“Cruel Summer“), Julie Bowen (“Hubie Halloween“), and Randall Park (“WandaVision“).

“Totally Killer” is a slasher flick with comedic beats and even has time travel, with characters traveling back to 1987 when horror flicks ruled video stores.

Following his detour back into horror with the recently released “Malignant,” filmmaker James Wan is back as the director on “Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom.” Filming on the follow-up to the billion-dollar hit has been underway in the United Kingdom. The returning cast includes Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, and Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus.

Comedic actor Randall Park (“Always Be My Maybe,” “Ant-Man & The Wasp“) is coming off a popular supporting role in Marvel Studios‘ first canonical entry into the world of television with “WandaVision,” reprising his MCU role of FBI Agent Jimmy Woo. It looks like he’ll be teaming up with another Marvel actor for an untitled action-comedy at Amazon Studios.

We’ll probably never know how “WandaVision” would have played with audiences had it been released following “Falcon and the Winter Soldier” as originally intended, but the first MCU show on Disney+ really felt like a microcosm of the MCU at large. There was big-budget spectacle with some character moments, a lot of fan service, and mystery box-ing meant to have the internet talking, great performances, and also an underwhelming CG-fest of a final confrontation.

Of all the series that Marvel Studios has announced for Disney+, the one that seems to have the least amount of “HOLY SHIT!”-esque buzz is probably “WandaVision.” Let’s be real, Scarlet Witch and Vision are clearly B-listers in the MCU. Don’t @ me, just being real. They’re great, of course, but not Cap, Iron Man, Thor, or Black Widow, right? So, Marvel Studios is going to make “WandaVision” must-see TV by filling out the cast of the series with some incredible actors.

The Netflix gods have heard my prayers. “More rom-coms, please,” I often say, in my more soulful moments, to the data-driven powers that be. “And if it’s not too much to ask, can Michelle Buteau have more than one scene in this one?” With “Always Be My Maybe,” the streaming deities have blessed us with their best original romantic comedy yet, surpassing “Set It Up,” “Someone Great,” and even “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.” This literal LOL-filled film from sitcom showrunner Nahnatchka Khan doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it does provide a genuinely sweet, truly funny film that is sure to be watched and rewatched on many Saturday afternoons on the couch in pajamas.

Netflix has become the defacto place for people to find the best quality rom-coms in 2019. This subgenre of films has been neglected in theaters for a while now (unless you talk about “Crazy Rich Asians”), but the streaming service is here to spend money on some of the best that the genre has to offer. And Netflix’s latest entry is the upcoming film “Always Be My Maybe.”

As seen in the new trailer, “Always Be My Maybe” follows the story of an overachieving celebrity chef that is getting married to an equally impressive male partner.

Released in the shadow of “Avengers: Infinity War” (much like the first film), “Ant-Man And The Wasp,” was nevertheless a summer hit and a nice, playful antidote to the grim seriousness of the ‘Avengers’ epic. Directed by Peyton Reed (“Bring It On,” “The Break-Up,”), the filmmaker inherited the “Ant-Man” franchise under controversial and questionable circumstances—Edgar Wright and Marvel parted ways last minute on his iteration of the superhero movie.

Word of warning. If you have not seen “Ant-Man and the Wasp” you’re likely going to want to wait to read this.  There are a number of major spoilers in the context of our discussion with director Peyton Reed.  Best known for “Bring and On” and “Yes Man,” Reed was famously a last minute replacement for the first “Ant-Man” movie after Edgar Wright left following creative differences with the studio.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made history today inviting a record 928 new members as it aims to expedite its long-term goal of a more diverse membership overall.

According to the AMPAS 49% of the new members are women, 38% are People of Color and they represent 59 different countries. These efforts are making an impact. In 2015 just 8% of the members were POC. That percentage has jumped to 16% in 2018.

Where DC Films can’t seem to get one movie out without some kind of major problem (“Wonder Woman” aside), even when Edgar Wright left “Ant-Man,” Marvel didn’t seem too ruffled. The reins were passed to Peyton Reed, Adam McKay was brought in to polish the script, and the result was a hit with fans and critics alike.

Like most workplace holiday parties, “Office Christmas Party” reeks of desperation and an incessant need to have fun at every turn. Sure, there are some generally reliable players (T.J. Miller, Jason Bateman, Kate McKinnon), which keeps things from getting deathly dull, but the newest film from directors Josh Gordon and Will Speck (“Blades of Glory”) is mostly uninspired and bland.

It’s that time of year, when the will to get wasted and blow off the steam of the past 12 months has to be measured against maintaining your composure at the office Christmas party. Many have fallen prey to too much eggnog when hanging out with their co-workers and wind up carrying some real regret into January. And for the characters in Universal‘s plainly titled “Office Christmas Party,” things are going to get — as the kids say — lit af.

The holiday party at work is the one time of year where you get the chance to see your co-workers for who they really are. Sometimes, all it takes is a couple glasses of eggnog to loosen ties, and suddenly Chad from Accounting is saying what he really thinks of the boss, right to his face. And in it’s that spirit that “Office Christmas Party” is headed to the big screen.

It’s safe to say that Arnold Schwarzenegger has had a rough go of things since his incumbency as the governor of California. “The Expendables” franchise has seen diminishing returns (both critically and commercially), working with interesting filmmakers Kim Jee-woon (“The Last Stand”) and David Ayer (“Sabotage”) didn’t quite pan out, his zombie drama “Maggie” barely limped into theaters, and “Terminator: Genisys” became the most critically-panned entry in the long-running series.
