According to a just-released Netflix announcement, Ferrell and Youssef are set to star opposite each other in the new series “GOLF” (yes, it’s capitalized). The exact plot of the series isn’t known, but we do know that Ferrell will play a fictional golf legend in the show.

No longer is TV storytelling seen as “less than.” Often, the very best acting, writing, and directing is seen in episodes of TV. Alas, there’s still the allure of film. There’s something about the Oscars that is somehow more meaningful than the Emmys. So, it’s understandable why someone like Ramy Youssef would still see the idea of film as something a bit more attractive than TV.

But it’s not just nabbing Venice’s top prize: “Poor Things” received unanimous praise from the Lido, with many critics already proclaiming it the year’s (or even decade’s) best film. Is it all hype or is Lanthimos on his way to collecting another Best Picture Oscar at the Academy Awards?

That seems to be Searchlight Picture’s plan for “Poor Things.” Directed by Greek weird wave director Yorgos Lanthimos, the movie sees the filmmaker reteam with Emma Stone. Last time they collaborated, viewers got the period comedy “The Favourite,” which is definitely one of our favorite films of the last decade.

And given the Greek director’s penchant for perplexing cinema, don’t be surprised if “Poor Things” makes a lot of Top 10 lists from critics at the end of the year (or tops those lists). And maybe I’m just following the wrong people on social media, but “Ramy” is one of the best shows on television that continues to be hilarious and cringe, filled with so many uncomfortable situations. Yet it’s also layered with so much depth with ideas of faith, belief, identity, purpose, and in this season, ideas of “Maktub,” the Arabic word for what is already decreed, or established; “as it is written,” if you will.

Cans of dog food are piled in the windshield. He listens silently to a CD explaining how to be a good Muslim. That ending to “Ramy” season two was akin to a firecracker exploding in your hand.

Obviously, there are likely plenty of reasons, including a global pandemic, why it’s taken so long for Season 3 to arrive. But it appears that the folks behind “Ramy,” namely star/creative mastermind Ramy Youssef, are using that break as a way to almost relaunch the series and attract folks who maybe haven’t seen the previous episodes.

For decades, TV and film in the West have followed mainstream political narratives, offering Muslims and Arabs of all faiths and none a narrow screen binary: you’re either a villain or a victim. In recent years, shows like A24’s “Ramy,” “Man Like Mobeen,” and “We Are Lady Parts” have been making great strides in changing that, offering much-maligned audiences the chance to see some of their own nuances reflected back at them (not to mention allowing often-typecast performers to play characters with more depth than Terrorist #7 or Woman with Headscarf).

In a recent interview with Esquire Middle East, Mohammed “Mo” Amer recounted the origins of his upcoming Netflix comedy series, “Mo.” After sketching out the opening scene, Amer tucked the draft away for seven years. During his acceptance speech, Youssef quipped to the coterie of television and film, “I know you guys haven’t seen my show.” That should change after Season 2. “Ramy”—by virtue of Youssef and his co-creators Ari Katcher and Ryan Welch—returns to Hulu for its second season, and, once again, deftly explores the tribulations associated with balancing the dogmas of religion and identity in the midst of an immigrant family.

The series tackled important topics such as religious persecution and bigotry by showcasing the trials and tribulations of its lead character, a young Muslim-American. In addition to its strong message, the series was just flat-out funny, thanks to its talented writing staff and lead performance by Ramy Youssef.

And as seen in the new trailer for Season 2 of the Hulu award-winning series, produced by none other than A24, Youssef is bringing some serious acting firepower to the new episodes thanks to the addition of Mahershala Ali to the cast, as a Muslim religious leader.

Part of that had to do with Gervais’ knife’s edge performance as host — no doubt, the star-studded auditorium didn’t exactly warm up to his occasionally-savage opening monologue — and part of it had to do with the truly surprising crop of winners, from “Missing Link” (beating out two Disney blockbusters for Best Animated Motion Picture) to the night’s big victor “1917,” which triumphed over expected winner “The Irishman” for Best Motion Picture – Drama.

However, it appears that one place where she won’t be lending her talents any longer is the series, “Ramy.” And going off what she says in her recent tweets about the situation, there’s some problematic stuff happening behind the scenes of the acclaimed Hulu comedy series.

Now, the production company makes the leap to scripted TV with the upcoming Hulu comedy series “Ramy.”
