Kid-befriends-animal films have been a staple of the industry for ages. While a bit more niche, we’ve even seen blockbuster kid-befriends-sea-animal films, as well, with “Free Willy” leading the way. Now, we get another entry in the tried-and-true subgenre with “Blueback.”

As seen in the trailer, “Blueback” is a film about a young girl who dives into the ocean and meets a wild blue groper.

‘Run Hide Fight’ Is Exactly Why No One Ever Asked For A School-Shooting ‘Die Hard’ [Venice Review]

So somebody somewhere one day had a thought: “What if ‘Die Hard’ except a school shooting?” and not only didn’t they immediately check themselves for other symptoms of lead poisoning but thought, “Yep, that’s a winner” and went on to make the movie. Presumably, that person was Kyle Rankin, writer-director of the staggeringly misguided, deeply noxious “Run Hide Fight.” But let’s not wholly exonerate all the friends, collaborators, script-readers, caterers, mailmen, grocers, friendly passersby, and supportive family pets who may have had a hand, however slight, in helping this thing to come to pass.

Review: ‘The Crazies’ Is Horrifyingly Boring

If you’re going to make a horror movie called “The Crazies,” you’d better go big or go home. Unfortunately for director Breck Eisner, helming his first film since the abysmal “Sahara” way back in 2005, he seems to be blissfully unaware that anyone could come into this film with any sort of expectations.

And maybe he’s not wrong. After all, the film is a remake of a minor George Romero film from the ’70s and as far as the concept goes it’s all pretty standard fare nowadays.

‘Henry Poole’ Is… Well, Hopeless

God, poor Mark Pellington, the director of “Henry Poole Is Here. The former video director – Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy;” famous clips for NIN, Foo Fighters, The Flaming Lips; filmmaker behind “U2 3D” – lost his wife suddenly and tragically in a car accident four years ago and had to raise their 2 1/2-year-old daughter on his own.

Obviously the guy went through hell and back to make it through such devastation, so when you’re reading the press notes of ‘Henry Poole’ is here before the movie starts and being informed of all this tragedy, you can’t help but feel for the guy, side with him and understand his motivations to make a film rooted in touching and spiritual themes of life, death, love, loss, etc., even if those sentiments can be rather cliche.

Alright, we’ve got a first look exclusive at the tracklist for the “Henry Poole Is Here” soundtrack. We know the jury is out for a lot of people on this film (for a small few anyhow), but what can we say, it looks good and looks up our alley. Plus we have a soft spot for Luke Wilson and the weirdly hot soccer mom that is Larry David’s “Curb Your Enthusiam” wife Cheryl Hines (Radha Mitchell and Adriana Barraza, also star)

The soundtrack, which comes out August 12 via Lakeshore Records, features the trailer song, “Believe” by ersatz rockers The Bravery, Badly Drawn Boy’s “Promises” from Born In The UK, and “Love Of The Loveless” by L.A.

This summer’s requisite quirky indie film is about a disillusioned drunk who attempts to hide from life in his rundown suburban home only to find he can’t escape the forces of hope when his neighbors discover a vision of Jesus as a water stain on the side of his house and then all hell breaks loose when pilgrimages to his home begin and modern-day miracles star to occur (hello run-on synopsis).

Guess Which Summer Quirky Indie-Comedy Will Have A Hipster Friendly Soundtrack?

Sometimes it pays to watch trailers and pay attention.

This summer’s indie-flick “Henry Poole Is Here” will feature songs by Bob Dylan, Badly Drawn Boy, Ben Harper, Eels and Blur (sounds like the StereoVegan wheelhouse). We know this because we used our eyes when watching the trailer (see above).

But let’s back up a bit.

So Mark Pellington used to be a music video director – he made his name directing Pearl Jam’s most famous video, “Jeremy,” and also lensed lots of famous clips for NIN, Foo Fighters, The Flaming Lips and Alice In Chains – then he went on to make direct “U2 3D” and a bunch of other crap (“The Mothman Prophesies”).
