‘Rabbit Hole’ Slated For December 17th Release

If there’s one film that entered the Toronto International Film Festival without distribution and then left the fest sitting prettier than all other films of its ilk, it is undoubtedly John Cameron Mitchell’s “Rabbit Hole.”

Scooped up by Lionsgate, the acquisition surely came with a certain dollar commitment figure for the Oscars and it’s easy to see why. Mitchell’s parental grieving drama boasts powerhouse performances from all its members especially lead actress Nicole Kidman, supporting actress Dianne Wiest and co-star Aaron Eckhart (who’s frankly just as good as anyone in the cast, but is likely to be overlooked come awards season).

More TIFF capsule reviews of films we’ve already written full-blown reviews of – this writer just wants to get some thoughts off his chest.

So mainly, make fun of Nicole Kidman all you want, the fact remains that she’s a terrific actress and whenever coupled with a strong director (Lars Von Trier, Jonathan Glazer, Gus Van Sant), she does some stellar work and that certainly applies to John Cameron Mitchell’s third, feature-length directorial effort, “Rabbit Hole,” a grieving drama about two parents who have lost their child and easily his most mature and understated piece of work.

Coming out of TIFF with strong reviews (read ours here), with particular notice given to the performance by the film’s star Nicole Kidman, we now have our first look at John Cameron Mitchell’s drama “Rabbit Hole.”

The two clips in the video below are a good slice of what the film has in store. The film follows Becca and Howie Corbett (Kidman and Aaron Eckhart) as they try to get on with their lives in the wake of the death of their young son in a car accident.

John Cameron Mitchell’s ‘Rabbit Hole’ Starring Nicole Kidman & Aaron Eckhart Acquired By Lionsgate

John Cameron Mitchell’s long-awaited drama “Rabbit Hole” made its premiere at TIFF on Monday night and has since been largely impressing critics who have seen the film. We saw it and were certainly taken by what is a very powerful look at the devastating emotional wake caused by the death of a child.

Lionsgate has gone ahead and snatched up the North American distribution rights for the film and more importantly, plan to release it before the end of the year.

For John Cameron Mitchell’s third feature he’s moved away from profiling the kinds of characters that populated “Hedwig & The Angry Inch” and “Shortbus” and instead delves into the domestic turmoil of an upper middle class family. Based on the play by David Lindsay-Abaire and adapted for the screen by the playwrite himself, “Rabbit Hole” explores the lasting wounds caused by the loss of a loved one and the unsteady road that must be taken to heal.

Cracking Teaser Poster For John Cameron Mitchell’s ‘Rabbit Hole’ Starring Nicole Kidman & Aaron Eckhart

A literally and figuratively cracking teaser poster for John Cameron Mitchell’s sure to be award-season friendly drama “Rabbit Hole” has been unveiled on the website of the film’s foreign sales company, Affinity Intl.

The feature will mark the first opportunity Mitchell has had working with A-list level talent which should make for fascinating viewing in itself. The helmer quickly noted a difference describing his two leads in Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart as “virtuosic,” the “Stradivarius” of acting talent and “a beautiful resonate instrument that can respond to gentle guidance.”

Adapted for the screen by David Lindsay-Abaire from his own acclaimed play, “Rabbit Hole” centers on a couple’s fraying relationship as they struggle to cope with the death of their young son.

Joel Schumacher Tries Again To Make A Decent Movie: Set To Direct Nicolas Cage & Nicole Kidman In ‘Trespass’

Joel Schumacher must have the world’s luckiest rabbit foot. How else do you explain one of Hollywood’s most generic, often witless filmmakers working not only consistently but prolifically? His last film, “Blood Creek,” was dumped into dollar theaters ceremoniously, and the buzz is dire on his latest, the drug drama “Twelve.” This coming on the heels of the disastrous “The Number 23” and we wonder just how Schumacher has avoided going straight-to-DVD by now.

Schumacher has now resurfaced on “Trespass,” a thriller that has Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman attached to star.

Abel Korzeniowski Takes Over Scoring Duties On ‘Rabbit Hole’ From Owen Pallett

Polish composer Abel Korzeniowski has replaced Owen Pallett for the score of John Mitchell Cameron’s upcoming drama “Rabbit Hole” according to MovieScore.

Final Fantasy mastermind and infrequent Arcade Fire member Pallett previously revealed he had been completing work for the film but, due to to prior scheduling with touring for his new album Heartland, would have to leave his work incomplete in the hands of producers to decide its future.

Unfortunately for Pallett, Korzeniowski has been recruited to score the film after making a name for himself with the moving and emotional score for Tom Ford’s “A Single Man” that featured on our Best Of Soundtracks & Scores list of 2009 and received a Golden Globe nomination.

Final Fantasy (Owen Pallett) Scoring John Cameron Mitchell’s ‘Rabbit Hole’… Maybe

Musician Owen Pallett has revealed that he is currently composing the score to John Cameron Mitchell’s upcoming drama “Rabbit Hole” but will have to leave his work potentially incomplete and in the hands of producers.

“I think I’m actually not going to be scoring it, despite the fact that I’ve scored it,” reveals Pallett, the braintrust behind, Final Fantasy, and sometimes a member of the Arcade Fire, who has now reverted back to his real name and shied away from his video game nom de plume for legal reasons.

In a video interview with Screen Daily, director John Cameron Mitchell has spoken glowingly and at length about his upcoming adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire’s award-winning stage play “Rabbit Hole.” Starring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart, the film follows the story of a young couple who are struggling to cope with the death of their four year old son.

“It truly is the first script that knocked me back, drew me in, made me want to set aside what I was working on because I felt so much reading the film,” Mitchell revealed.

Hugh Hefner has given his stamp of approval for the prospect of Robert Downey Jr. playing him in a biopic (for what seems like the third time). Of the potential project, the Hef revealed: “Downey and I have talked about it and it is a very real possibility. He’s a marvelous actor and I would be honored if he decided to do it.” That’ll be easy enough for Downey Jr. He’ll just channel Tony Stark again.
