Then Quibi died and the scraps were bought by Roku. And apparently, that included “The Now,” which is finally hitting the streaming service.

The COVID-19 pandemic affected the world in ways that will take years to document, whether the public wants to revisit or reflect on this time or not. And it also made some stories, even from a movie or television industry perspective, seem inconsequential. But there were either pop culture events or business dealings that need to be documented. And, you might be surprised by some of them.

And you probably remember those clothing ads for their surprising lack of, well, clothing.

It’s the natural result of hormones going crazy from a living being growing inside of another human body. But in the upcoming Quibi show, “The Expecting,” the typical pregnancy issues can’t touch what is happening to a young waitress.

Unfortunately, that didn’t totally pan out, and the company is struggling to remain in business, reportedly. However, that doesn’t mean the earlier Quibi shows didn’t have some standouts or at least series that struck a chord with some viewers, such as “50 States of Fright.”

He famously helped give the Russo brothers their start after being impressed with their Slamdance debut “Pieces” in 1997 (and he went to bat for them when vying for the directing job of “Captain America: Winter Soldier” at Marvel) and urged Warner Bros.

Sure, company’s go through rough patches, as many are finding themselves in right now during the global pandemic. Unfortunately, Quibi’s history only dates back to April, and the platform’s short history has been, well, one big rough patch. And if a Wall Street Journal report is any indication, Quibi’s future seems to be truly up in the air.

In the March chaos of COVID-19 (soon before the service launched), Quibi failed to answer basic questions about themselves and their model: are people willing to watch TV series primarily on their mobile devices?

Sure, the whole format is strange with “quick bite” content of roughly 10-minute episodes of series. But also, the sheer number of celebrities with odd ideas for shows just adds to the confusion. Did you ever wonder what would happen if Chrissy Teigen was a real judge? Quibi has your answer in “Chrissy’s Court,” for example.

You combine a healthy library of well-known titles with a bunch of new original series/films featuring A-list actors and/or big-name filmmakers. In Quibi’s case, without a library, the platform has launched with a huge selection of talented stars and filmmakers to bring the “quick bite” content to a large audience. So far, it hasn’t been going so hot.

But in the new Quibi series, “Die Hart,” the actor does his best to learn how to be the badass lead.

As seen in the trailer for the meta-series, “Die Hart,” Kevin Hart stars as a fictional version of himself, a comedic actor that dreams of being the action lead.

Better yet, what does it take to launch a media company that is attempting to create a new type of content in the crowded streaming environment? Lots of money, clearly. And probably, incredible leadership. At least, that’s what you hope for. In the case of Quibi, the money was never a question (the start-up streaming platform raised more than $1.75 billion), but some have begun to wonder if the leadership is up to the task of making “quick bite” content work.

And though much of it involves charitable actions, we’ve also seen filmmakers and creators also do short films and fun little projects from the comfort of their own homes. And it appears that the biggest, star-studded project to spawn from the COVID-19 pandemic is a new ‘Home Movie’ version of “The Princess Bride.”

Quibi is the new home of a project that takes some of the biggest names in Hollywood and allows them to recreate scenes from “The Princess Bride” from their own homes in the most low-budget way possible.

The service has fallen well short of its modest expectations and is spending insane amounts of cash just to keep its name in the streaming conversation. But speaking in an interview at SeriesFest (via Deadline), Quibi founder Jeffrey Katzenberg seems to be turning these seemingly obvious failures into positive experiences.

My dear, Quibi. Things aren’t looking so good, huh? With a decent, if not muted, debut during a pandemic and a marketing campaign that seems to have been, uh, not great, it appears that the fledgling streaming service is falling on hard times. And according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, times are just hard, but they’re pretty dire.

The full report is a fascinating read, diving deep into the behind-the-scenes drama of the company, specifically with its two leaders, founder Jeffrey Katzenberg and CEO Meg Whitman.

In a field dominated by titans like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, it takes a lot to be an immediate contender. Basically, Disney+ and HBO Max are only in the conversation because of the mega-corporations and massive libraries they bring. Quibi, on the other hand, needed to build everything from scratch, and so far, hasn’t made the massive impact that some would have hoped for, especially considering the huge investments the company received before launching.

After a first week where the app was downloaded millions of times, the new streaming platform that focuses almost entirely on mobile viewing quickly plateaued and fell out of the Top 10 download lists on mobile devices. On iTunes, the app isn’t even amongst the top 50. Needless to say, for a new company that has gained more than $1 billion in funding, this type of mediocre launch amidst a crowded streaming playing field is not ideal.
