‘Push’ Tops The Sundance Film Festival’s Biggest Prizes

If you haven’t noticed already, the Sundance Film Festival is a wrap. “An Education” might have been the film attracting all the buzz and headlines at Sundance, but it’s the drama “Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire,” starring actress Mo’Nique (no seriously), that topped the Festival’s big prizes.

Not only did the film win the Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the Dramatic Audience Award, Mo’nique’s performance as a horrendously cruel mother to an obese, illiterate girl struggling in Harlem earned her a Special Jury Prize (our Sundance contributors called this one immediately too – they loved it).

Sundance Report: ‘Adventureland,’ ‘Big Fan,’ ‘Push’ & ‘The Messenger’

More Sundance and more reviews our in. Thoughts on Greg Mottola’s “Adventureland” seemed mixed. Some people seem to dig it, some people not so much, but no one seems to either love or hate it, which is maybe an ok thing. Maybe it will have a long, cult-ish shelf life.

Our contributor Jonathan Hafter writes, “[Adventureland”] is probably going succeed more on the audience’s connection to Mottola’s “Superbad” and reluctant-star Kristen Stewart than on whether it’s all that good.

Dakota Fanning Gets All Punk Rock For “Riveting Action-Thriller” ‘Push’?

Wait, Dakota Fanning gets raped and then all of a sudden shes’ in a “riveting action-thriller”? [ed. whoa dude, too soon] It’s like, “I’m all growed up, I can put down the tea-cup,” and “burrow my way into the deadly world of psychic espionage!” WTF? Ok, maybe not “punk rock” per se, but she’s already dyed red stripes into her nappy-looking hair? Wasn’t she just in a training bra and playing on a swing last week?
