Great news, “Predator” fans: a new pic in the franchise is on the way. And no, it’s not “Prey 2,” although that’s still very much in development. Deadline reports that 20th Century has greenlit “Badlands,” a new standalone tale in the franchise, with “Prey” director Dan Trachtenberg returning to direct. And Patrick Aison, who wrote “Prey,” also returns for the new sequel, with he and Trachtenberg working on the story of “Badlands” together.

You may be unaware of one of Emmy’s embarrassing little secrets. The Television Movie category. For more than a decade, acclaimed works have often been overlooked for what can only be described as “questionable” nominees. The results have been so head-scratching it’s found critics suggesting means to reform or even scrap the category. But a funny little thing happened last month. The 2023 Emmy nominations were announced and the Television Movie nominees were…not bad? In fact, one of the nominees, a film that earned six nominations overall, Dan Trachtenberg’s “Prey,” was a shockingly “correct” and deserved choice by the Television Academy.

From prequels being quietly released on streamers to multiple festival hits making way to theatrical releases and George Miller’s return, the schedule feels particularly eclectic.

Dan Trachtenberg‘s “Prey” hits Hulu next month, and the director’s first movie since 2016’s “10 Cloverfield Lane” is a riveting new take on the “Predator” franchise. The film takes place in the 1700s and follows a female Comanche warrior who takes on one of the fearsome intergalactic hunters to protect her tribe. And Trachtenberg found inspiration for the movie’s premise from an unlikely place: a scene from the original “Predator‘ his friends told him about as a kid that isn’t actually in the movie.

The “Predator” action, thriller-horror franchise has really been through the wringer over the years. After the first classic film, directed by John McTiernan, things quickly went south. While there is affection for “Predator 2” with Danny Glover, that sequel didn’t make much money and it kind of killed the franchise for nearly 15 years. Then came the “Alien vs. Predator” films starting in 2004 and these piss-poor films really hurt the brand (and were so bad, they compelled Ridley Scott to not come back for a proper “Alien 5” movie set on earth).

We really haven’t had any huge announcements from 20th Century Studios in quite some time and that seems to have changed as we’ve gotten a handful of updates from the head of the studio in a recent one-on-one interview about various franchises the studio oversees for Disney.

The Hollywood Reporter was able to speak with 20th Century Studios President Steve Asbell about the upcoming films that audiences can look forward to in the future beyond the four “Avatar” sequels directed by James Cameron, as Asbell was adamant the studio will hit its December 2022 release for “Avatar 2.”

The studio boss promised the studio has “more ‘Free Guy‘ movies coming.” Adding it’s already busy in the scripting stage of development, “We’re awaiting a script that is days away.

Still, in the new accelerated age of streaming with HBO Max, Apple TV+, Amazon, Netflix, and all the new players popping up every single day, it seems, the task becomes more and more daunting and nearly impossible (we could have easily gone to 200 this year).

So we’re post-COVID, but oops, not-yet post-COVID, but somehow movies have survived, even if the theatrical market becomes a more challenging and riskier gambit.

We’ve known for a while now that 20th Century Studios was hoping to reboot the “Predator” franchise with a new film in the series from director Dan Trachtenberg. The working title that was used during filming was simply called “Skulls,” but no other information was revealed. Now, as part of Disney+ Day, 20th Century Studios and Hulu have announced the new “Predator” film is actually called “Prey” and is coming to the streaming platform in 2022.
