If you’re looking for quality content and storytelling in the month of August that’s new and fresh (rather than say, further exploring what the Criterion Channel has to offer or binging shows you’ve yet to get to like “Vida“), might I suggest looking to TV, rather than films?

While film will have some bright spots in an ultimately dreary month, television has plenty of returning greats and new, intriguing shows that diverge from typical comedies or dramas that are worth diving into.

Like many in the last couple of weeks, I’ve been watching and enjoying Netflix’s latest show, “Stranger Things.” A homage to 1980s sci-fi and horror stories like “E.T.,” “The Goonies,” “It” and “Predator,” among many others, the Duffer Brothers’ show might not have an original thought in its head, but it’s also eminently watchable and deeply satisfying, repackaging its myriad influences into something that feels fresh, pulling it off with real love, and filling it with surprisingly well-executed character beats.

It’s good that this is the ninth episode and “Preacher” has had time to build up to this level of blood and horror. It hasn’t just amped up levels of gore, beginning with its first scene in Ratwater that culminates in a beheading. Instead, it’s the inherently disturbing nature of what we’re seeing that manages to be shocking even after the eight hours of violence that preceded it. Whether it’s the de-limbed seraphim sitting in a tub of her own blood begging to be put out of her misery, children’s heads tumbling from a bloody American flag or Emily sacrificing Miles to save our beloved Cassidy, this is not amateur-level awfulness.

Even the hour’s title – “El Valero” – slyly references its original name: Mission San Antonio de Valero.

With each episode, “Preacher” brings us closer to realizing there may be more demon than angel in its title character. This isn’t new territory for AMC, with complex protagonists leading previous shows like “Breaking Bad” and “Mad Men.” But each hour reveals that Jesse (Dominic Cooper) may not be an antihero like Don Draper; instead, he’s closer to the villainy of Walter White and he’s hopefully not who we’re rooting for, unless there’s a dramatic character arc to come.

The best episode of “Preacher” to date, “Sundowner” starts with a bang and ends with a whimper (from me and my fellow Eugene fans, at least). It’s an hour filled with action, revelations-with-a-lowercase-r, humor and a tragedy that serves as a punch to a gut. We’ve spent enough time with these characters that it isn’t only the battle royale fought between warring angels, an Irish vampire, and the titular character that makes this good television; instead it’s their interactions that keep the episode on its A-game.

If you’re looking for a singular, focused narrative without any detours, “Preacher” is not the series for you. Go back to CBS. This wacky AMC drama bounces from plotline to plotline, sometimes without logic or purpose that’s evident in the moment. But what’s interesting about the show – and becoming more evident with each episode that airs – is that there is intent in the snippets we get into tertiary storylines that is moving the show forward in a compelling way.

Other than its bonkers, WTF first minutes and a requisite crazy scene with vampire Cassidy, episode four of “Preacher” is its quietest yet. No one turns a single household item into a weapon in this hour. “Monster Swamp” is largely set-up, both for the conversion of Odin Quincannon (Jackie Earle Haley) in its final moments and plotlines for future episodes. Even at its most calm, “Preacher” is still one of the delightfully odder shows on TV, but this hour feels mostly like setting the table with only a small taste of the meal to come.

Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), Tulip O’Hare (Ruth Negga) and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) not only manage to create (mostly) human characters amidst the chaos and the blood, but they’re also the best part of a delightfully bonkers narrative.
