In the case of “Power Rangers,” it’s obvious that Hasbro isn’t going to let that property sit on the shelf much longer, despite already attempting one reboot.

Last we heard, Hasbro was going to team up with Paramount to make a sequel to the 2017 rebooted “Power Rangers” film.

Disney‘s “Beauty And The Beast” continued its commanding hold at the multiplex, spending the second straight week on top of the box office with $88 million domestic, and added another $119 million overseas. This brings the global total after two weeks to $690 million, and it looks like $1 billion worldwide is simply an inevitability at this point.

The “Power Rangers” property might not be a lot of things, but it is enthusiastically, unabashedly goofy. The Japanese import is cheap, colorful, fast-paced, action-packed, juvenile and totally pun-tacular, and these are all qualities that — for better or worse — fail to transfer into Dean Israelite’s moody and typically somber big-budget reboot. Sacrificing the TV series’ inherent silliness for bleakness, edginess, (moderately) grounded stakes and halfway soulful, progressive character analysis is a blessing and a curse.

But Lionsgate hopes a big bucks blockbuster can kick off a new franchise, and as far as the tone goes, they’re embracing the “yeah, this is kinda weird” spirit you might be feeling.

A cast of mostly new and rising faces — Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Naomi Scott, Becky G and Ludi Lin — are the young heroes who find themselves with color coded abilities, and must jump into action when a threat from beyond arrives.
