Back in March, veteran actor Sam Elliott made some tasteless comments about Jane Campion’s compelling western thriller “Power of The Dog” while appearing on the WTF podcast. Elliot took issue with the “piece of shit” film about the American West having been shot by a woman from New Zealand and was upset about the story’s homosexual overtones. Campion herself responded in kind, calling him a “bitch” and reminding Elliott that he is just an actor, not a cowboy.

The current lowdown on the Adapted Screenplay category will sound very familiar to a number of other races this awards season. There are just three or four likely locks for a nomination, Jane Campion‘s adaptation of Thomas Savage‘s novel, “The Power of the Dog,” Maggie Gyllenhaal’s adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s “The Lost Daughter,” Tony Kushner’s adaptation of the original stage play for “West Side Story” and, maybe, Sian Heder’s English adaptation of the French film “La Famille Bélier” for “CODA.

This year’s Best Picture race is all about the 10. There won’t be seven, eight or nine nominees this year. No, the Academy has guaranteed that there will be 10 selections for the first time since 2011. What that means in terms of recognizable trends remains to be seen, but the increasingly international membership means there could be at least two non-English language players announced on February 8. Then again, maybe not.

Director Jane Campion is back with the Netflix film “Power of The Dog” after a 12-year hiatus from feature-length filmmaking (she did make two “Top Of The Lake” series during this time). The western thriller has an impressive cast consisting of Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Thomasin McKenzie, and Jesse Plemons.
