Filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos (“The Favourite“) is easily one of the most exciting filmmakers on the planet, and thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long for his follow-up to “Poor Things.” Searchlight Pictures, who previously distributed Lanthimos’ last two movies, has dropped a first-look trailer for “Kinds of Kindness,” which will be released on June 21.

The impressive cast assembled around Oscar-winner Emma Stone in Lanthimos’ next film “Kinds of Kindness” includes Jesse Plemons (“Civil War,” “Killers of The Flower Moon”), Willem Dafoe (“Poor Things,” “The Lighthouse”), Margaret Qualley (“Drive-Away Dolls”), Hong Chau (“The Whale,” “The Menu”), Joe Alwyn (“The Favourite”), Mamoudou Athie (“Elemental,” “Jurassic World: Dominion”), and Hunter Schafer (“Cuckoo,” “Euphoria”).

After a long awards season, thankfully without much of an Oscar villain to speak of, the 96th Academy Awards were held last night, and Academy trophies were bestowed on all the winners. Those victories obviously came with a fleet of emotional and earnest acceptance speeches (see below). While many acceptance speeches were quick or casual, some others, like Jonathan Glazer (“Zone of Interest”) and documentary director Mstyslav Chernov of “20 Days In Mariupol” were more political, using their speeches to make stands against the wars in both Gaza and Ukraine, respectively, with a sentiment of peace behind both.

Before the 96th Academy Awards 14 women had won the Best Actress Oscar more than once. That list has now expanded by one after Emma Stone won her second trophy in the category for Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.” She previously won in 2017 for “La La Land.”

The box office may still be doing its best to return to its pre-pandemic heights, but there continue to be encouraging signs all around. The latest is Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” crossing $100 million at the global box office. This was confirmed by the studio today, February 27. The Best Picture nominee joins A24’s “Everything Everywhere All At Once” as the only initial limited release, “independent” or non-major studio release to hit that figure since the March 2020 pandemic.

The race for the Costume Design Academy Award is still up in the air, but no matter what happens, Holly Waddington and Jacqueline Duran will always have their 2024 Costume Designer Awards wins. The pair took Excellence in Period Film for “Poor Things” and Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film for “Barbie,” respectively. The third movie honor, Excellence in Contemporary Film went to Sophie Canale for “Saltburn.”

On the television side, Helen Huang gave “Beef” another guild honor in the Contemporary Television field while Sharon Long won Period Television for the now canceled, but not forgotten, “The Great.” In a super competitive category, Shawna Trpcic son Sci-Fi/Fantasy Television for “Ahsoka.” In a wonderful surprise, Michelle Page Collins landed another canceled series (at least unofficially), “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” a win in the Variety, Reality-Competition, Live Television field.

The Oscar nominations may have been revealed, but thre are still guild award nominations to announce. This morning, the American CInema Editors revealed the nominees for the 74th Annual Eddie Awards celebrating the best in film and television editing. There were few surprises with the five Oscar nominees for Best Editing, with “The Holdovers,” “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” all earning ACE noms across two different categories.

The 2024 Oscars season has taken a final turn around the awards season race track. This morning, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid announced the nominees for the 76th Academy Awards, and, as expected, Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer” led all films with 13 nominations, including a coveted Best Picture nom. “Poor Things” earned 11 noms, while “Killers of the Flower Moon” took 10 nods, and “Barbie” landed eight.

In hindsight, it might not seem like it, but the 2024 Oscar season has been highly competitive on many fronts. First carried by the directors during the WGA and SAG strikes, the race got a November boost when the latter came to an end and the actors were free to promote to their heart’s content. And while those work stoppages sadly affected several potential awards players, in the long run, it was probably always going to come down to “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Poor Things,” and “The Holdovers.”

Awards Season finally has some twists and turns to contend with before the Oscar nominations are revealed on Tuesday. Today, the 2024 BATA Awards nominations were revealed and snubs and surprises were almost everywhere. The big news, however, was that Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” led all films with 13 nominations followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” with 11.

Those two films were joined in the five-nominee Best Film category by Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Justin Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” and, in a surprise, Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers.”

Overall, “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Zone of Interest” each scored nine nominations, but the former saw both Scorsese and Lily Gladstone snubbed in Best Director and Lead Actress.

The American Society of Cinematographers revealed the nominees for the 2024 ASC Awards, a precursor to the Oscar for Cinematography, and the results were somewhat as expected. Emphasis on “somewhat.” In the Theatrical Feature Film category, Matthew Libatique (“Maestro”), Robbie Ryan (“Poor Things”), Hoyte van Hoytema (“Oppeneheimer”), and Rodrigo Prieto (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) all earned nominations. They were joined by Edward Lachman who was honored for his work on Pablo Larrain‘s “El Conde.”

The Art Directors Guild revealed the nominees for the 28th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards also known as the ADG Awards this morning and there were, for better or worse, few surprises. On the film side, potential Oscar nominees “Asteroid City,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things” and “Oppenheimer” all earned nominations in the three ADG film categories. The television categories saw familiar players such as “The Crown,” “The Gilded Age,” “Succession,” and “The Bear” land noms.

We’ve been lucky to interview Willem Dafoe several times over the years. The 68-year-old actor, whose resume should put him on the shortlist for an honorary Oscar at this point, has always been, at worst, politely pleasant, but he’s never suffered fools. It was enlightening then, when speaking last month, to find him beaming while discussing his role in “Poor Things.” Dafoe knows when he’s in a special movie and Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest creation is just that.

Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster earned 18 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Margot Robbie), Best Supporting Actress (America Ferrera), and three Best Song nominations. “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” earned 13 nominations each, while “Killers of the Flower Moon” took 12.

It’s been a mad, whirlwind 2023, and we can’t believe it’s almost over. Despite the tensions in our industry, the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, those linger aftereffects, and the way that box office seemed to wobble all year long with highs and lows—#Barbenheimer being a big high, seemingly sure bets like ‘Mission Impossible’ and “The Marvels’ and all DC superhero films flopping or underperforming—it’s kind of been chaotic year for the film and TV industry.

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association selected Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” as their Best Film of 2023. Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” was runner-up. For those looking for any Oscar influence in LAFCA’s pick, only four winners have gone on to win Best Picture this century.
