Ian McShane To Play Blackbeard In ‘Pirates 4’

Here’s some inspired casting. Ian McShane is in negotiations with Disney to appear in “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” aka “Pirates 4” alongside Johnny Depp and new female lead Penelope Cruz.

McShane will play the central antagonist, the pirate Blackbeard. Cruz’s role is elucidated somewhat as THR calls her Depp’s “foil and equal” in a story that centers around the Fountain of Youth (hopefully someone saw “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and realized how funny Cruz can be when speaking in her native tongue; can popcorn-munching pleebs tolerate that?).

Rob Marshall Confirms He’s Directing ‘Pirates 4’

We were hoping Rob Marshall would pass on “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” a gig he was in talks for earlier this year, but so much time had passed (at least in blog years) we assumed he had moved on (plus we had heard some rumors of a British director possibly jumping on board).

But it seems that Marshall has confirmed that he will be the next captain of the “Pirates 4” ship.

‘Pirates 4’ Slightly Troubled? Laeta Kalogridis To Pen ‘Ghost In The Shell’ For Dreamworks

Was the “Pirates 4,” aka “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” coming summer 2011 a premature announcement or have things changed since then? “I understand that there was an announcement that there was going to be a fourth, and now I’ve been told since that that was not a reliable announcement,” Bill Nighy who plays the evil Squid Guy (or whatever his toy tie-in name is) told Sci-Fi wire. Rob Marshall (“Chicago”) was in talks to take over for Gore “extra nacho cheese” Verbinski (who dropped out a while ago), but that was so long ago, it’s probably safe to assume that part of the problem is that a director hasn’t been found yet (not to mention Johnny Depp’s recent reticence after a Disney honcho he was loyal to got the ax).

The fourth installment of the “Pirates Of The Caribbean” franchise is rumored to follow Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow on his search for the fountain of youth, a plot point hinted at the end of “At World’s End.” There will also reportedly be a “Captain Nemo-type villain utilizing new-style technology.” Meh. Kevin MacDonald’s epic-Roman-adventure “The Eagle Of The Ninth” has begun principal photography in Hungary and Scotland. The film stars Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, Mark Strong and Donald Sutherland and will center on young centurion Marcus Aquila (Tatum) who arrives from Rome to solve the twenty year old mystery of the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth.

Ok, last week there were rumors: Tim Burton to direct ‘Pirates 4,’ Johnny Depp to early crazy millions of dollars and Sacha Baron Cohen to co-star, right?

Well, writer Terry Rossio, who had a hand in writing all three of the previous franchise installments said the rumors are just that.

“For the record, none of the recent Pirates 4 rumors have any truth, including the so-called record 50 million dollar payday for Depp,” Rossio said on a message board Wordplay (via Cinemablend)

Johnny Depp To Get Paid $56 Million For McPirate 4: Extra Nacho Cheese

This time with 25% more nacho cheese flavor, Johnny Depp is apparently being paid $500 trillion dollars to appear in ‘Pirates 4’ for Disney. Ok, it’s only $56 million, reportedly, but still that’s a shitload of dough. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are expected to not sign on for the fourth edition cause they rather act they be a McFranchise and we can’t say we blame them.[DailyMail]

PS. Entertainment Weekly says two long-discussed Depp projects are dead in the water.
