It appears that actor-producer Margot Robbie and writer Christina Hodson enjoyed their time together on “Birds of Prey” so much that they’re willing to take their talents to the high seas, as the duo are said to be working on a new film in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.

According to THR, Margot Robbie has signed on to star in a new female-fronted ‘Pirates’ adventure over at Disney, and she’s bringing along her “Birds of Prey” writer Christina Hodson to pen the script.

Keith Richards To Return For ‘Pirates 4’; Trailer To Debut Before ‘Tron: Legacy’

Factoids straight in from the “things we’ll try and care about at some point” section of the internet: “Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides 3D” will boast, in addition to a horribly cumbersome title, a whole load of CG and Johnny Depp in glorious 3D SwaggerVision, a reprise by Keith Richards in his role as Jack Sparrow’s dad.

This nugget was buried in a Reuters article in Yahoo’s entertainment section, which was actually about Richards’ new autobiography that, from the sounds of it, you’d be advised to spend your time at home reading rather than suffering through “POTC4: OST3D”; in it he apparently details his long and sometimes troubled history with Jagger (aka Your Majesty, Brenda), includes anecdotes about famous types like John Lennon, and generally bars no holds in telling of his, by any standards, pretty exciting life.

Review: “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” Casts Its Spell On You

It’s interesting to think about the ways in which uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s output for Disney has evolved over the years. What was conceivable as a mid-level, high-concept star vehicle, say something like Tony Scott’s “Deja Vu” or “Crimson Tide,” just a few years ago, is now something of an impossibility, thanks to Disney’s recent laser-like focus on big budget family fare. (We recently reported how this mandate helped off Bruckheimer’s long-in-development “Killing Rommel.”) Everything Bruckheimer produces for the studio now is the kind of glitzy, audience-pandering extravaganza that isn’t exactly outside of his wheelhouse, but has now become his exclusive bread-and-butter, including this summer’s iffy “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.” And what’s so ironic is that it was Bruckheimer that helped make this mandate law after the astounding success of his “Pirates of the Caribbean” films.

Gore Verbinski To Direct ‘The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty’

We’ve had a certain fondness for Gore Verbinski ever since his debut with the above-average kids flick “Mousehunt” in 1998. He’s perhaps overly indebted to Burton and Gilliam, but is arguably more technically adept than either, and, while he’s yet to make a great film, even the worst of his work has something to recommend it (James Gandolfini’s performance in “The Mexican,” some of the smaller, Python-esque moments in “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”).

After the fairly disastrous box-office summer so far, there were reports that desperate studio executives were calling agencies, clamoring for original material. Had the era of turning any old recognizable property, from “Monopoly” to “The Smurfs,” into half-assed movies come to an end? Yeah, right.

Warner Bros have been developing a “Lego” movie for some time now; it even made our list of the Dumbest Movie Projects Announced In 2009 (placing above “Stretch Armstrong,” but below “View-Master”).

Gemma Ward Will Say Something In ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’

This was originally going to be smart-ass piece about models-turned-actresses, but when we looked up Gemma Ward’s tiny filmography, we learned that she was nominated for a couple of awards for her turn in the Australian indie drama “The Black Balloon.” Guess you learn something new every day.

Anyway, the model/actress is set to feature in her biggest film to date with a “small speaking part” in the upcoming blockbuster “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” She will play a mermaid, and most likely a pal of the other mermaid in the film played by Astrid Berges-Frisbey.

‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ Will Shoot In 3D, Hell Fails to Freeze Over

In a move that could have been predicted by that guy at the bus station who doesn’t wear pants and claims to be Jackie Onassis, Disney have announced that, after some debate, next summer’s fourquel “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” will be shot in “Disney Digital 3D.” Disney Digital 3D, as everybody knows, differs from your standard form of 3D in that it’s created in an enormous facility under EPCOT Centre by fairies, who weave it from dreams, wishes, and leftover merchandise from “Chicken Little.”

While the three-dimensionalization of the studio’s big 2011 tentpole was inevitable, it’s at least comforting that it’ll be shot in 3D, rather than getting a shoddy “Clash of the Titans”-style conversion.

Disney Sets New Pixar Dates: ‘Monsters Inc. 2’ and ‘Brave’ For 2012

Right now over on the Disney lot in Los Angeles, newly installed bigwig Rich Ross (who replaced the well-respected Bob Iger last year) is doing a big song and dance about the studio’s upcoming slate, including a tribute to Jerry Bruckheimer (the super-producer has two movies for the studio opening this summer: “Prince of Persia: Sands of Time” and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”). Much of what’s being reported out of the presentation is old news (“Pirates 4” casting information, etc.) but there are a couple of big announcements in regards to Pixar’s upcoming slate.

Sam Clafin (Who?) Joins ‘POTC 4: On Stranger Tides’

Walt Disney has announced that Sam Clafin has joined the cast of “Pirates Of The Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides” in the key role of Philip of a youth missionary who undoubtedly gets mixed up in the not so virtuous deeds of one Jack Sparrow. He beats out Max Irons (Jeremy Irons son) for the role that has been described as the replacement part for the absent Orlando Bloom (though we doubt he’ll replace the character and instead will take on a similar kind of role).

Astrid Berges-Frisbey Swims Into ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’

Relatively unknown French actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey will be making her Hollywood debut in a big way, joining the cast of the forthcoming blockbuster “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”

Berges-Frisbey will play a mermaid in the film and joins an illustrious cast that includes Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane and Stephen Graham. The film will be directed by Rob Marshall, but thankfully will not have any musical numbers.

Ian McShane To Play Blackbeard In ‘Pirates 4’

Here’s some inspired casting. Ian McShane is in negotiations with Disney to appear in “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” aka “Pirates 4” alongside Johnny Depp and new female lead Penelope Cruz.

McShane will play the central antagonist, the pirate Blackbeard. Cruz’s role is elucidated somewhat as THR calls her Depp’s “foil and equal” in a story that centers around the Fountain of Youth (hopefully someone saw “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and realized how funny Cruz can be when speaking in her native tongue; can popcorn-munching pleebs tolerate that?).

‘Revolutionary Road’/’Jekyll’ Writer To Pen ‘Lone Ranger’ Film For Disney

There hasn’t been a lot of movement on Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney’s “The Lone Ranger” film in quite some time.

And that’s because a script hasn’t been written. We do know that George Clooney won’t be playing the Lone Ranger (as once rumored), but Johnny Depp will play Tonto (which was announced about a year ago or more).

But some small movement on the project was announced late last night. Justin Haythe, who adapted “Revolutionary Road” for Sam Mendes, wrote the Fox come-and-gone thriller, “The Clearing” and more importantly is also eventually scribing, “Jekyll” for Nicolas Winding Refn starring Keanu Reeves, is in negotiations to pen “The Lone Ranger” script.

Preview Hans Zimmer’s ‘Sherlock Holmes’ Score

With Guy Ritchie’s bros-befores-hos take on “Sherlock Holmes” just a couple of weeks away, a sneak peak of Hans Zimmer’s score has hit the web. The always strong composer has been particularly noteworthy lately, with his brilliant score for “The Dark Knight” (with James Newton Howard) and memorable themes for the “Pirates Of The Caribbean” franchise being particularly noteworthy.

The two-and-a-half minute excerpt below, promises more strong work from Zimmer. Alternating between bracing and jaunty, it seems to capture the general vibe Ritchie’s film is going for.

Disney Reveals ‘Pirates 4’ Title & Guillermo del Toro’s Animation Production Label

There’s some crazy Disney Expo thing going on right now and frankly, we don’t really care, but this is news.

‘Pirates Of The Caribbean 4’ is now officially titled, “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” and as you can see by the graphic, it’s hitting theaters summer 2011. Does that mean Rob Marshall (“Chicago,” “Nine”) is officially directing? Cause Gore “extra nacho cheese” Verbinski dropped out a while ago [ed. some of the other Playlist writers will be impressed to see that I retained this info, as I try and hit delete in my memory on most of these kinds of films].

Rob Marshall Set For ‘Pirates 4’ Captain’s Seat

This is an odd marriage if we’ve ever seen one. Rob Marshall (“Chicago,” “Nine”) is set to be named the director for the fourth movie in Disney’s never-ending “Pirates of the Caribbean” saga. Assuming this is declared in a timely manner, the movie is aiming towards a 2010 production start with Johnny Depp to return as the eyeliner heavy Captain Jack Sparrow.

‘Pirates 4’ hasn’t had a director since Gore Verbinski left earlier this year to work on the movie adaptation of the videogame “Bioshock,” which has since lost steam.

Comic-Con 2009 in San Diego is in full swing. A lot of nerd-tastic stuff happened. Here’s your round-up of Day 1 events, but we can confirm from reports on the ground that not one virginty has been lost yet. Still there are a few more days to go.

Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance at Comic-Con yesterday and, despite not speaking to the crowd at all, still set off screams, cheers and flashes aplenty.

A tiny bit old in terms of web ages. This international trailer for Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” went up online late last week. It’s… more of the same, and not that much different than last time. “Pirates Of The Caribbean” adventure tentpole, but played for just as silly laughs? For the Johnny Depp/ Disney movie, the pratfalls and slapstick family stylings were fine, but a lot of dorks probably are still hoping this is going to be something darker.

Jesus, we saw this Johnny Depp quote today at Vulture and thought, “Christ, again??” Depp is obsessed with Carol Channing.

“My dream role would be to play music legend Carol Channing in a biopic of her life. I love her, I really do. She’s amazing. With all the digital technology these days, I could probably pull it off.” Depp told the U.K. Mirror recently.

The singer and actress with the crazy, oft-imitated gravely voice was known for her work in Broadway musicals like, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, “Hello, Dolly!” (obviously she didn’t make the cut for the film versions).

Ok, this dubious Contact Music report is total bullshit, but man, imagine if it wasn’t?

Johnny Depp already almost got fired for playing his “Pirates Of the Caribbean” character as a gay and drunken Keith Richards, and his depiction of the Willy Wonka character in Tim Burton’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” was allegedly based on Michael Jackson.

So now apparently there’s talks of a Michael Jackson biopic with Depp in the lead.

Johnny Depp Puts More Doubt Into Terry Gilliams’ ‘Quixote,’ Says ‘Pirates 4,’ and ‘Dark Shadows’ Are On

Wanna know what projects Johnny Depp is doing in the future, for sure?

Easy. Get him in an interview, hand him a checklist and get him to go to work. According to this piece of paper MTV put to ’em, Depp is 100% sure for “Pirates Of The Caribbean 4,” and the remake of “Dark Shadows,” but things like “Sin City 3” (almost positively just a rumor anyhow, since ‘2’ is not even on the docket anytime soon), “The Lone Ranger,” Terry Gilliam’s “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote,” and “Rex Mundi,” are either not happening or still enough in development that Depp doesn’t feel like they’re a sure thing.

Guillermo Del Toro is set to test shoot the monster for his adaptation of “Frankenstein” in the coming weeks – a project which he describes as a “lifelong dream.” Del Toro also added that (surprise, surprise) Doug Jones — a near emaciated, rail-thin actor who played five creatures in “Hellboy II” and “Pan’s Labyrinth” — will be playing the monstrous creation of the Dr. Victor Frankenstein and that he has no immediate plans to shoot the whole thing as of yet.

Director Gore Verbinski says he’s had enough of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, thank you very much. Despite a 4th film already set for 2010, Verbinski says he won’t be at the ship’s helm. “I had a fantastic time bringing ‘Pirates’ to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry [Bruckheimer], Johnny [Depp] and the rest of the creative and production team,” Verbinski said. “I’m looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future.” Instead of Pirates, he will adapt the videogame “Bioshock” for the big screen.

That horrible X-Men, babies, sorry teenagers project, “X-Men: First Class” is going forward. Yes, there was the comic The New Mutants that specifically dealt with teenagers grappling with their new powers (most Marvel mutants gain powers around puberty), but this one is being written by “Gossip Girls” creator Josh Schwartz (who also did the pitiful, “The O.C.”) Does that mean Alexandra Patsavas (Schwartz’s go-to girl for music) with cheesy, pseudo hip, teen emo-indie rock like Paramore and Fall Out Boy (as she is wont to do with all her projects)?
