Judging by the films in development and what is constantly released, you would think that just about every Hollywood studio is obsessed with making sequels, reboots, and remakes of previously successful films and franchises. But apparently, that’s not the case with one hit comedy film, “Pineapple Express,” which never was given the chance at a sequel even with its all-star cast and devoted following. It would appear that Sony just wasn’t interested in more stoner adventures.

Judd Apatow Has An “Amazing” ‘Pineapple Express’ Sequel In Mind That “Deserves To Happen”

We live in an era of filmmaking where studios are constantly seeking new franchises to build. And even if a film does moderately well at the box office, a sequel is often greenlit and developed, no matter if it’s a terrible idea or not. But sometimes, a film is released and finds an audience, but the filmmakers associated just can’t seem to get a sequel going, as is apparently the case with the 2008 film, “Pineapple Express.”

In a new interview with LAD Bible, Judd Apatow, who helped develop and produce “Pineapple Express, said that he’s been trying to get a sequel to his stoner buddy comedy made for years, but there hasn’t been much movement on it.

It’s pretty fitting that 4/20, the day to celebrate getting high and cannabis culture would be a rather inane, insider-y and secret code-term made by high school stoners that didn’t want their parents to know they were going to get baked. Or that’s one theory from a rather nonsensical Wikipedia post which I’m convinced was jacked by the Internet today.

Some versions about the theories and origins of 4/20 was the California penal code or the police radio code for marijuana (False).

Pineapple Express + Belated Sequel Could= ‘Scarface’ One Day

“We talk about it all the time,” director David Gordon Green told MTV about the possibility of a “Pineapple Express 2.” “The most interesting spin is to go in the ‘Scarface’ direction. I want to see them in the Miami coke scene. It could get a little gruesome.”

The idea appears to be no deeper than the pitch stage though. “We keep talking to the studio. They’re going to organize a dinner someday,” Green said.

Ok, so recently we received the annual “The Big Lebowski” sequel update (still not happening) and the bi-monthly “Arrested Development” update (still being teased, likely never gonna happen), so why not give you the bi-annual update on “Pineapple Express 2” and “Superbad 2”?

While we’ve heard rumblings that a ‘Pineapple’ sequel could happen, when The Playlist spoke to the film’s writer, Evan Goldberg, at Comic-Con, he admitted that the team on the film, producer Judd Apatow, stars Seth Rogen and James Franco, and director David Gordon Green, actively petitioned Columbia for a sequel on their own.

Those still praying for a followup to the 2008 Judd Apatow stoner comedy “Pineapple Express” may have some solid hope thanks to a tidbit from an MTV interview with lead actor James Franco.

Franco, who will also star in ‘Express’ director David Gordon Green’s medieval comedy “Your Highness,” said he spoke with the director recently and remarked that the idea of a sequel — which has been discussed and tossed around ever since it’s 2008 release — is definitely “in the air” and “practical steps are being taken” to make it happen.

Looks like the “Pineapple Express” crew had a pretty good time working together and enjoyed the nice surprise of James Franco’s comedic talents.

The “Spider-Man,” ‘Pineapple’ star has joined the cast of David Gordon Green and Danny McBride’s medieval stoner comedy, “Your Highness” according to Harry Knowles over at AICN.

Knowles attended an “Observe & Report” afterparty where Green and McBride were naturally in the house (director Jody Hill is a close friend of that North Carolina based crew) where he spoke with McBride at length about the project.

Firstshowing got their hands on the Judd Apatow directed, “Pineapple Express”-centered Comedy tribute Oscar short, and man, this was pretty much the highlight of the night. While there was no outward evidence of pot, Seth Rogen and James Franco sitting on a couch watching highlights of this year’s Best Picture nominees was very stoner-humor inspired. The bit where they watched very serious moments of “The Reader” were hysterical and the “Milk” segment which obviously includes Franco was pretty damn funny too.

Who Got Snubbed From The Oscar’s List Of Eligible Best Original Songs?

Ok, the AMPAs released their list of eligible songs in the Oscar Best Original Song category late yesterday. 49 songs written specifically for a film in total were deemed good to go including obvious picks by Bruce Springsteen (“The Wrestler”), Peter Gabriel (“Wall-E”) and Beyonce (“Cadillac Records”).

But there were som snubs, yes? No major drastic omission comes to mind at the moment, but we’re surprised some of the Elton John-penned songs from “Australia” didn’t make the cut considering how much the Academy has loved him in the past (yes, this is the first time we mentioned that there are four Elton John songs in the film, we forgot; we believe there’s also a Imogen Heap in there as well, but we never really watched that closely).

We’re obviously planning a Best of 2008 list and even a Worst of 2008 list, but it never really occurred to us to do the more nuanced, Most Disappointing of 2008 list until we saw Spoutblog‘s list (they crazy about “Che,” let’s leave it at that). Films that disappointed, yes, this is a very subjective list. A lot of people are picking up on the Most Disappointed meme, but some seem to have a strange ideas of what “most disappointed” means.

So “Step Brothers” was retarded, but kind of awesome, right? In fact, the more and more we watch scenes that have leaked onto YouTube or deleted scenes (“It’s the fucking Catalina wine mixer“!) we kind of shy away from the fact that the film is pure mentally-challenged juvenalia and just enjoy the film for simply how absurd and funny it is. Despite the low-grade we gave it, in retrospect it’s feeling like our favorite comedy for the summer (let’s face it, “Pineapple Express” was kind of a disappointment).

Craig Robinson, known for playing sensitive tough guys in the Judd Apatow millieu, (the hitman in “Pineapple Express”, the doorman in “Knocked Up”) was arrested on June 29th and charged with possession of illicit substances, including ecstasy and methamphetamine. Are the problems this big teddy bear has going on in his life hinted at in his work? Maybe he should just show up on set the day of, like Robert Downey Jr. and wing it.

Stiller’s ‘Thunder’ Finally Dethrones ‘The Dark Knight,’ But Could Be Seen As A Box-Office Bomb In The Long Run

Christopher Nolan’s box office behemoth, “The Dark Knight” has finally been beaten at the U.S. Box Office by Ben Stiller’s “Tropic Thunder.” The Vietnam comedy took the top spot with a $26 million dollar weekend gross and took an estimated $10 million-ish dollars in its first two days of release (it opened early on a Wednesday) for a five day cume of around $37 mil.

‘TDK’s’ box office victim last week, “Pineapple Express” made less money on its first weekend than ‘Thunder,’ but the stoner comedy took five million more dollars after five days of release (‘Pineapple’ had a 50+% drop in it’s second weekend, but has grossed an impressive near-$63 million which is twice that of its $27 mil budget).

Judd Apatow and David Gordon Green’s “Pineapple Express” couldn’t unseat ‘TDK in its fourth week of release as the comic-book hero sequel raked in $26 million making it the third-biggest movie of all time box-office wise in North America. (TDK sits currently at #34 on the all-time world-record box-office list).

And for perspective: ranked for inflation on the North American all-time b.o. charts, ‘The Dark Knight’ comes in at a more modest #49.

Maybe the studios will really want a “Pineapple Express” sequel and unlike “Superbad” which they also wanted. Maybe Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will decide to write another one.

We honestly hope not, but regardless, David Gordon Green’s directorial effort for the Judd Apatow crew is burning up the box-office already and it’s not even Friday yet. It set the record for the best August Wednesday opening ever taking in 12.1 million from 3,072 theaters (honestly we didn’t even know it was opening up two days early; this seems like a trend, see “Tropic Thunder” which is following that Wednesday model).

By now, we all should know: Brad Pitt’s stoner in “True Romance” begat the idea for producer Judd Apatow who says the cameo performance basically compelled him to say, “Now, I wanna see a movie about THAT guy!”

For The Playlist, watching the detours of minor characters has never resounded louder for us than the scene in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” where the two car garage attendants take off in Cameron’s (Alan Ruck) father’s Ferrari.

Yes, we’ve seen “Pineapple Express” and we’ve determined – long ago actually – that the M.I.A. song in the trailer, “Paper Planes” is not in the movie.

No matter. How do we know “Pineapple Express” is going to be a big hit with probably around a $45 million box-office take-in when it opens on August 6? (that’s our conservative guess) Well, for one, given the fact the trailer is so damn popular it’s given new life to M.I.A’s track from the Kala record she released in 2007 and entered the cultural sphere.

Speaking of another Judd Apatow project, take note. There’s an Apatow film out practically every season, every 4-5 months, yes? Well, not this year. After “Pineapple Express,” the next Judd Apatow film you see won’t be until summer 2009. That’ll be the biblical comedy “Year One” starring Michael Cera, Jack Black and McLovin‘ as directed by Harold Ramis (or “Funny People” which is also “eyeing” a summer 2009 release). Maybe he’s starting to realize it becomes a bit of overkill when the films are all back to back and or maybe shooting schedules dictated the dates, but we’re pretty sure “Year One” should be almost finished by now (it’s definitely wrapped).

‘Pineapple Express’ Hits Brooklyn Early

Last night we caught the New York/Brooklyn premiere of the Judd Apatow stoner action comedy, “Pineapple Express” directed by David Gordon Green and starring Seth Rogen and James Franco that was all part of DGG film fest week at BAM.

Like many other movie fans, it was probably one of our most highly anticipated films of the summer (if not the most) and high expectations can sometimes be problematic. To be an apologist about it, we didn’t love it like everyone else seemed to, including our big group of friends (surprise, we have “friends”!), but we did enjoy it a lot and we laughed hard most of the time.

A lot of the chatter in the indie-world film this week is whether indie-auteur David Gordon Green has “gone pop,” now that his Judd Apatow-produced action comedy, “Pineapple Express” is hitting theaters in two weeks (August 6). In fact, this talk is growing louder in New York given ‘Express’ is having its Brooklyn premiere early this Thursday at BAM’s cinematek in honor of the David Gordon Green curated film festival that’s running this week (we saw Peter Weir’s 1975 dreamy mystery “Picnic At Hanging Rock” this weekend and its strange tones can be vaguely seen in things like Green’s “Undertow.”).
