The 2018 PGA Awards were handed out Saturday night in Los Angeles and the two big winners were “The Shape of Water” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

Guillermo del Toro‘s period fantasy took the theatrical prize, giving it a key guild win which is considered historically necessary to win the Oscar for Best Picture. The past two years the winner of this honor did not end up winning the Academy Award (“La La Land,” “The Big Short”), but it won the previous eight years beginning with “No Country For Old Men” in 2008.

The Oscar nominations won’t even be revealed until Tuesday, but this is a big weekend if you believe major guild honors are key indicators of what movie will win Best Picture. The PGA Awards are handed out in a private ceremony on Saturday night, while the SAG Awards take place 24 hours later Sunday evening in a broadcast on TNT and TBS (the DGA Awards are not until February).   Last year “Moonlight” made history as the only film this century to win the Best Picture Oscar without taking a key guild honor.

The Producers Guild of America announced the nominees for their year-end awards this morning and for the top film category you could argue it was a very commercial list of nominees.

Outside of the cinephile favorite “Call Me By Your Name” the nominees included indie hits such as “The Big Sick,” “Lady Bird,” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and “The Shape of Water” as well as broad players that are less indie than they seem, “I, Tonya” and “Molly’s Game.”  Trow in traditional studio releases such as “The Post,” “Dunkirk” and, surprise, “Wonder Woman” and you have your ten.
