There are the folks that remember her mainly for her work in the “Twilight” franchise (probably the larger contingent). Then you have the people that are more impressed by Stewart’s post-“Twilight” filmography, which consists of auteur dramas and indie darlings. Perhaps there’s a third group (the smallest, by a mile) that really dig her in “Charlie’s Angels.” One thing is for sure, Kristen Stewart has made a ton of films in her career.

But it has also evolved to feature many more implications and describes any number of feelings – excitement, transgression, titillation, and intrigue.

However, what I hope doesn’t end is the string of quality cinema we have been graced in 2017.

It’s easy to belabor the point that 2017 was a great year for cinema amongst the vacuum of film critics and cinephiles that we occupy, but this year, that quality seeped into the mainstream.

One way you can do that is by going through our Best Films Of 2017, and once you’ve done that, you might want to see how it stacks up against the selections from the venerable Film Comment.

The votes from contributors to the terrific movie magazine lean arthouse, but we have (mostly) no fault with their selections.

On the one hand, there are some series which expand beyond the frame of conventional television and are absolutely cinematic in almost every detail of their execution. However, there is enough great television that you can put that material on a separate list, and plenty of fantastic movies that equally deserve the space on their own list, with lots of foreign and small films that could use the love, without being bounced for TV series.

The boutique label has unveiled their lineup for the year’s scariest month, and it’s pretty damn incredible.

Kicking things off is David Lynch‘s “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.” With the new series set to be wrapped by then, this will be the perfect way to continue uncovering the many mysteries packed into the show.

The latest from “Clouds Of Sils Maria” team Olivier Assayas and Kristen Stewart took home Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival last year (tied with Cristian Mungiu for “Graduation“) and has been praised by many, but there have been just as many voices who didn’t roll with the movie.

“Kong: Skull Island” launched with $61 million domestic, beating studio estimates, and added another $81.6 million abroad, for a total global haul of $142.6 million. Whether or not this is a winning debut depends on if you’re looking at the glass half empty or half full.

There are, at a conservative count, four different movies inside Olivier Assayas‘ new film, led by his “Clouds of Sils Maria” star Kristen Stewart, and two of them might even be quite good. There’s the full blown ghost story, complete with creaking floorboard, haunted house, CG-phantasms-hanging-out-of-chandeliers-spewing-ectoplasm, which is unexpected.

Not only did I select Oliver Assayas‘ supernatural drama “Personal Shopper” for my top 10 list of 2016, I also chose “Clouds of Sils Maria” as one of my top films of 2014. The former, which debuted at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and thereby qualified for my top 10, is finally hitting theaters in the U.S.

Of course you did, since it’s all everyone can talk about in the movie world. That is completely understandable, of course, given the monumental victory by “Moonlight” in the top category, and the immense confusion and awkwardness of the mistake on live television.

But now that March is upon us and spring is not far away, we wish to remind you that 2017 at the movies is in full swing, with a wide array of new releases for any taste or viewing habit.

The duo previously paired on the celebrated, César winning “Clouds Of Sils Maria,” but this time around, they have something a bit more supernatural in mind.

Set in Paris, the ambitious story involves high fashion, spirits, and communicating with the dead.

Jessica Kiang kind of hated it, Gregory Ellwood kinda loved it (it made his top 10 of 2016), and I would say I’m somewhere in the middle but leaning positive, warts and all. Yes, Assayas’ film has its problems and can be borderline ridiculous at times, but that ridiculousness can be fun. It’s also on our Best Films Of 2017 We’ve Already Seen list and yes, there was some squabbling over that, too.

Whatever else we have to expect in the 363 days to come (and actually, the first 48 hours have been pretty good on the whole), it promises to be a good year for the movies, as you might have seen from our 100 Most Anticipated Movies piece a month or so back. But somehow, that was just the tip of the iceberg.

But, don’t worry. We’re still friends. It’s just a passionate debate between two friends who probably know way to much about what they are talking about.

But, it’s fun.

Frankly, I’m not convinced 2017 will actually be better, but at least there is always the hope great new movies will distract us from the authoritarian government that is quickly swooping into power. Keep hope alive, right?

As we enter the annual the “best of” season many have commented on “what a great year for movies” 2016 was. This writer thinks that hot take may exaggerating the overall mediocrity of the past 12 months.

And while the pundits will continue to ring the death knell over and over again, this week’s upcoming New York Film Festival is irrefutable proof that cinema is alive and healthier than ever.

The 54th annual New York Film Festival kicks off this Friday and as usual, the stellar programming is a top-shelf selection of artful and intelligently-made cinema.

You’ve seen all the full winners of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival here, maybe you’re shocked, maybe you’re surprised, or in many cases just angry at what many are calling “head scratching” choices from the jury lead by George Miller (“Mad Max: Fury Road“), but just remember the judges are a random group of people each year and much harder to predict than the rather consistent governing body of voters in the Academy.

This evening in the south of France, the George Miller-led jury have made their selection of the winners. And as per usual, there were some major curveballs.

Ashgar Farhadi‘s well-received but not particularly wildly acclaimed “The Salesman” landed two awards for Best Actor and Best Screenplay.

Assayas and his leading lady were on hand today at the film’s press conference and jovially answered questions about the boos and the film’s inspirations.

While the director had some very interesting thoughts, the highlight was listening to Stewart describe her acting process, the film, working with Assayas (with whom she’s collaborated with on “Clouds of Sils Maria,” in a role that won her the Cesar for Best Actress) and whether she believes in ghosts.
