There are two types of film fans when it comes to the career of Kristen Stewart. There are the folks that remember her mainly for her work in the “Twilight” franchise (probably the larger contingent). Then you have the people that are more impressed by Stewart’s post-“Twilight” filmography, which consists of auteur dramas and indie darlings. Perhaps there’s a third group (the smallest, by a mile) that really dig her in “Charlie’s Angels.” One thing is for sure, Kristen Stewart has made a ton of films in her career.

If you were up late last night, you might’ve seen a somewhat heated debated unfold on Film Twitter, about whether or not television could be considered in the category of Best Movies. On the one hand, there are some series which expand beyond the frame of conventional television and are absolutely cinematic in almost every detail of their execution. However, there is enough great television that you can put that material on a separate list, and plenty of fantastic movies that equally deserve the space on their own list, with lots of foreign and small films that could use the love, without being bounced for TV series.

“Kong: Skull Island” launched with $61 million domestic, beating studio estimates, and added another $81.6 million abroad, for a total global haul of $142.6 million. Whether or not this is a winning debut depends on if you’re looking at the glass half empty or half full.

There’s the full blown ghost story, complete with creaking floorboard, haunted house, CG-phantasms-hanging-out-of-chandeliers-spewing-ectoplasm, which is unexpected.

Jessica Kiang kind of hated it, Gregory Ellwood kinda loved it (it made his top 10 of 2016), and I would say I’m somewhere in the middle but leaning positive, warts and all. Yes, Assayas’ film has its problems and can be borderline ridiculous at times, but that ridiculousness can be fun. It’s also on our Best Films Of 2017 We’ve Already Seen list and yes, there was some squabbling over that, too.

Topping the list is Maren Ade‘s “Toni Erdmann,” a movie that made a huge impact at Cannes, and looks like it’s going to remembered very well in the month ahead as critics and publications make their annual tallies.

Olivier Assayas‘ “Personal Shopper” starring an excellent Kristen Stewart had the dubious honor at this year’s Cannes to be first from the Competition to solicit loud boos and jeers after it screened last night for press (our review). Assayas and his leading lady were on hand today at the film’s press conference and jovially answered questions about the boos and the film’s inspirations.

While the director had some very interesting thoughts, the highlight was listening to Stewart describe her acting process, the film, working with Assayas (with whom she’s collaborated with on “Clouds of Sils Maria,” in a role that won her the Cesar for Best Actress) and whether she believes in ghosts.
