We reviewed these two indies a few weeks ago, here they are in basically the same form, possibly a few tweaks with perspective, but our thoughts haven’t changed on them and neither have the grades. Both these film open in limited New York, Los Angeles on August 1. Presumably (and hopefully) they expand after that.

Frozen River (full review)
What is it about some indie filmmakers, and many of that Sundance mien, that want to torture you with the abject misery that befalls their already down and out hard luck characters?

The Playlist has seen to many damn movies lately and not all of them are worth full-length reviews. That and the fact, if we don’t write them out now, we probably never will. Here’s some capsule reviews.

Patti Smith: Dream of Life – dir. Steven Sebring

Other studios cried foul at their numbers and it’s all blown up in WB’s face. The film actually only grossed $18.6 million and has been demoted to the third spot – laughably behind an Ashton Kutcher rom-com even he bet against.

“Patti Smith: Dream of Life” Trailer

Rodrigo Perez — Mon, 11 Feb 2008 16:54:00 +0000

“It’s not a rock ‘n’ roll film, it’s not a concert film, it’s a humanistic film,” Patti Smith told reporters on Saturday after the mostly black and white documentary – 12 years in the making – was screened at the Berlin Film Festival. The punk pioneer actually performed at her press conference playing “My Blakean Year” with her acoustic guitar, which drew a standing ovation.

“People have asked me about documentaries for decades and I never really wanted to do anything because I always imagined documentaries as something you did after someone died,” she told Variety.
