After nearly three decades of making movies, Michael Bay will get into the TV business; or at least the Netflix business.  THR reports that the director is in talks to helm the streamer’s adaptation of “Barbaric,” based on the best-selling Vault Comics series of the same name.  A TV show about a barbarian and his talking demonic axe as they seek redemption sounds like quite the departure for the guy who made “Bad Boys,” “Transformers,” and “Ambulance,” but maybe Bay’s hefty camera movements suit this show’s purpose.

Clearly, the franchise has stalled as a movie property; the films cost a certain amount and never recoup the way they should, and that fourth “Star Trek” movie is going to be in so much limbo, it’s easy to foresee the current cast just moving on. So, Paramount and Viacom have clearly retreated to television, putting the franchise all over CBS-All Access (now Paramount+) and seemingly going overboard.

In hindsight, the best thing to ever happen to ‘Star Trek‘ was its unaired pilot. ‘The Cage,’ which introduced us to Christopher Pike, set a precedent for the ‘Star Trek’ universe that has never been broken. Characters can (and do) cross over between series and timelines, but always as a way of showing the evolving history of the Federation and its citizens. Whereas other franchises might get dinged for bringing back familiar faces and exploring established backstories, ‘Star Trek’ has made that a core part of its identity since pretty much day one.

Sir Patrick Stewart is still waiting for his invite to the Dolby Theater and we’re (probably) running out of time.  The legendary star of stage, little screen and big screen is a spry 77-years-old and while he’s as busy as ever it’s always worth noting that Father Time waits for now one.  Stewart, who is a Grammy winner, Golden Globe and Emmy nominee, hasn’t had a lot of opportunities for award season consideration on the big screen over the years but there’s a chance that changes with James Mangold‘s “Logan.”

Stewart reprised the role of Professor X for likely the last time in a Wolverine film that turned out to be more grounded and realistic than any previous 20th Century Fox “X-Men” installment.

I will admit, ashamed as I am, that I have not yet finished watching the first season of FX’s “Legion.” While the series pilot was truly one of the best episodes of television to air this year, subsequent episodes disappointed in their stricter adherence to traditional superhero show conventions. I bailed on the show fairly early.

I’ve been assured that in later episodes the show returns to the experimental short-film aesthetic of the pilot, and I have been planning to catch myself up on the series at some point down the line.

Do two movies make a trend? Well, if so, black-and-white versions of blockbuster movies is now a thing. After George Miller brought “Mad Max: Fury Road” back to cinemas and home video in a black and chrome cut, James Mangold is doing the same with “Logan” in a version known as “Logan Noir.”

The director has dropped a trailer for the monochrome version, which gives you all the action and Johnny Cash‘s cover of Nine Inch Nails‘ “Hurt” which you’ve seen before, but given more moody gravitas in black-and-white.
