“‘Passion Play’ is a cliche-riddled, risible and utterly painful experience that boasts hallmark sentiments and TV movie-of-the-week sensibilities mixed in a disastrous attempt to make a love story about unearned redemption.”

That’s what we said in our review of Mitch Glazer’s completely ill-advised fairy tale, a film that drew numerous walkouts and bouts of laughter from TIFF audiences. So we’re kind of baffled why Image ponied up seven figures for the film with a promise of a theatrical release.

TIFF Acquisitions: ‘Beginners,’ ‘Passion Play’ & ‘Rare Exports’ All Get Distribution

While it was a somewhat mixed bag, quality wise, at the Toronto International Film Festival this time around, the good news, after a shaky few years in the independent film sector, is that acquisitions have been very busy this year, with the likes of “Meek’s Cutoff,” “Everything Must Go,” “Insidious,” “Super,” “The Conspirator,” “Rabbit Hole,” “Submarine,” “Dirty Girl” and “Incendies” all finding homes after their festival debuts. The festival wrapped up last night, but there are still a few films being picked up, from a critical favorite to one of the more reviled films shown.

TIFF ’10 Review: ‘Passion Play’ Is An Excruciating, Unbearable Disaster

This week has not been a good one for screenwriter’s making their directorial debuts, proving that storytellers and visualists were all not created equally. Sophomoric, pedestrian and hokey beyond words, Mitch Glazer’s excruciating romantic fairytale “Passion Play” is a cliche-riddled, risible and utterly painful experience that boasts hallmark sentiments and TV movie-of-the-week sensibilities mixed in a disastrous attempt to make a love story about unearned redemption.

Mickey Rourke stars as Nick Poole, a down-and-out jazz trumpeter who was once a star, but heroin and hubris eventually dragged him down to rock bottom, playing dives for 50 bucks a pop.

Here’s a first look clip of Mitch Glazer’s upcoming fantastical-tinged ’50s-set drama “Passion Play” starring Mickey Rourke, Megan Fox and Bill Murray.

The film centers on a down-and-out trumpet player (Rourke) who seeks redemption through an angel (a winged circus freak played by Fox) in Los Angeles. Rourke has talked Fox up a fair bit during production, even casting aside all his previous female co-stars calling Fox “probably the best young actress I’ve ever worked with” — but he’s always been one to shoot his mouth off, no?

We’ve already seen one small look at Mitch Glazer’s “Passion Play” starring Mickey Rourke and Megan Fox, and now we’ve got our hands on another.

The film centers on a down-and-out trumpet player (Rourke) who seeks redemption through an angel in 1950s Los Angeles (Fox). Earlier this year, Rourke said Megan Fox is, “probably the best young actress I’ve ever worked with.” This is also coming from someone who talks a lot of trash and threw his “The Wrestler” co-star Marisa Tomei under the bus, so we should probably consider this high praise.

Here’s your first look at Mickey Rourke and Megan Fox on the set of Mitch Glazer’s “Passion Play” via EW.

The film, about a down-and-out trumpet player (Rourke) who seeks redemption through an angel in 1950s Los Angeles, has apparently just wrapped. And Rourke had some high praise for Megan Fox, calling her “probably the best young actress I’ve ever worked with.”

So wait, what about Rachel Evan Wood in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Wrestler”?

Bill Murray Replaces Toby Kebbell, And Joins Megan Fox And Mickey Rourke For ‘Passion Play’

Production Weekly has twittered that Mitch Glazer’s “Passion Play,” currently filming in New Mexico, has received a boost of star power, as Bill Murray has replaced Toby Kebbell in the role of Happy Shannon, a “murderous mobster.”

While there are no details why Kebbell left the production (too bad they couldn’t put him in another role, he’s generally great), Murray is familiar with Glazer’s work and starred in the underrated “Scrooged,” which he wrote.

Shooting begins next week in New Mexico.

A few months ago, an indie project called, “Passion Plays,” starring the fireworks combination of Megan Fox and Mickey Rourke was announced. A film to be directed by writer-turned-director Mitch Glazer (“Great Expectations,” “Scrooged”), what was known at the time was that the movie would star Rourke as a down-and-out trumpet player who seeks redemption through Fox’s character described as an angel in 1950’s Los Angeles. Most people, at least us were like, right, cool, check, next.
