Is it Friday again already? These summer weeks just seem to fly by. Of course, the forgettable tripe Hollywood produces regularly can hardly qualify as a milestone. This weekend’s mainstream offerings continue the tried-and-true triad of ‘action /blockbuster, comedy/ romance, and horror/ thriller.’ As for limited release, if the names Paul Giamatti and Charlyne Yi excite you, this might not be a bad weekend to venture to the theater.

The story of this weekend’s box office battlefield is probably more interesting than any of the stories it is depicting, but no less predictable: American bad-asses vs.

Best soundtrack song of the year? Contradictory Playlist post of the year?

Here’s your first listen to Charlyne Yi’s “Magic Perfume,” a track that is essentially the first single off the “Paper Heart” soundtrack album, details of which we exclusively revealed. But to recap, the album comes out August 4 and features Alden Penner (ex member of Montreal indie-rockers the Unicorns and Clues) and Zach Condon from Beirut, plus a score written by Michael Cera and Yi.

Exclusive Details: ‘Paper Heart’ Soundtrack Hits On August 4

We already revealed to you first that Michael Cera and Charlyne Yi had written the score to their upcoming pseudo-documentary, “Paper Heart,” and the fact that helping out on the soundtrack was Alden Penner (ex member of Montreal indie-rockers the Unicorns and Clues) and Zach Condon from Beirut.

And now we have the soundtrack details. As we noted previously, Alden actually produced the score and contributed two new original songs, while Condon wrote one original song (“The 11th Arrondissement “) for the film as well.

ComicCon First Looks: ‘Iron Man 2,’ ‘Alice In Wonderland,’ ‘Plan 9’ & More…

So much for no ComicCon coverage, but this is too easy. EW has a bunch of first looks, or relative first looks in some cases of films that will make a splash at ComicCon including, “Iron Man 2,” (a better look at that Robert Downey Jr./ Tony Stark racing driver suit image), Tim Burton’s 3D “Alice In Wonderland,” and his produced animated film, “Plan 9,” and pics of “Pandorum” starring Dennis Quaid, kid zombies from “Zombieland,” “Paper Heart,” starring Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera, Park Chan Wook’s “Thirst,” and the animated “Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs,” which will include the voices of Bill Hader, Anna Faris, and Andy Samberg.

Have we been a little testy, perhaps impatient with the genre of preciousness and twee?

Probably. Sometimes the idea of Sufjan Stevens blaring in a room with “Little Miss Sunshine” playing on a loop and the FOX SEARCHLIGHT banner flashing at you repeatedly is enough to make you want to induce instant suicide. Kidding! (sort of)

However one film that we’re actually looking forward to believe it or not (hey, it can’t be as obnoxious as “Napoleon Dynamite,” amIrite?) is the Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera film, “Paper Heart.”

Part documentary, part fictional feature directed by Nicholas Jasenovec, the film follows Yi on her whimsical quest to document her skepticism on the concept of love.

Martin Starr Says Platontic Love Story With Charlene Yi Might Have Familiar ‘Harold & Maude’ Vibe

Remember Martin Starr’s recent “announcement” (random talk in an interview) that he was writing a script with Charlyne Yi based on uncomfortable party experiences in L.A.?

In an interview with this guy, Starr says the film will have a familiar Hal Ashby vibe.

“We still haven’t worked out a lot of the details, but it’s basically a story about platonic love, the friendship between a young man and an old, decrepit woman…It definitely has a familiar [Harold and Maude-Like] tone to it, and well, oddly enough, it’s set in the ‘70s.

The poster for Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera’s “Paper Heart” has been unveiled via Cinematical and its basically a sample of twee-looking stills from the happy-go-lucky, looking-for-love, quasi documentary.

The synopsis of the film is a giddy: wheeeeeeee! Ooooooh! fuuuuuuun! wheeeeee! tee hee! wheeeeeeee! Ooooooh! fuuuuuuun! wheeeeee! tee hee! wheeeeeeee! Twee Alert: Trailer For Michael Cera and Charlyne Yi’s ‘Paper Heart’ Debuts

The first trailer for Michael Cera and Charlyne Yi’s “Paper Heart” has been unveiled after being attached to “17 Again” over the weekend (what, seriously?)

The part documentary, part fictional feature directed by Nicholas Jasenovec follows Yi on her precious quest to document her skepticism on the concept of love. The film seems to transition between the documentary and a fictionalized love story between her and Cera (who’s also her real life boyfriend) that interplays with her journey.

2009: The Year You Finally Hate Michael Cera?

We are as excited (if not more) than anyone about “Youth In Revolt” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” moderately interested in “Year One,” entirely skeptical about the love story movie “Paper Heart” and watching every movement on the “Arrested Development” movie.

However, that adds up to one hell of a lot of Michael Cera in 2009- even if “Arrested Development” is more of a 2010 thing, that’s leading roles on 4 movies, 3 of which are major studio productions, this year!

‘Push’ Tops The Sundance Film Festival’s Biggest Prizes

If you haven’t noticed already, the Sundance Film Festival is a wrap. “An Education” might have been the film attracting all the buzz and headlines at Sundance, but it’s the drama “Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire,” starring actress Mo’Nique (no seriously), that topped the Festival’s big prizes.

Not only did the film win the Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the Dramatic Audience Award, Mo’nique’s performance as a horrendously cruel mother to an obese, illiterate girl struggling in Harlem earned her a Special Jury Prize (our Sundance contributors called this one immediately too – they loved it).

Since we’re pretty on top of any and all “Paper Heart” news and we’ve already mentioned Clark Duke and co-star Michael Cera‘s “silly joke band” The Long Goodbye a couple of times, I thought it only right to mention Charlene Yi‘s not-entirely-serious band The Glass Beef.

The other member of The Glass Beef is none other than Paul Rust, future star of “I Love You, Beth Cooper” and member of Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds”.

What they have now are never before scenes from Michael Cera’s not-so “secret” (anymore) quasi-documentary about himself and his girlfriend, comedienne Charlyne Yi. 15+ Films You Should See If You’re Going To Sundance 2009

Ok, we’re not going to Sundance this year, like a lot of other journalists and freelancers (the event is “subdued” and “chilled” this year evidently). The line-up seems underwhelming, but then again, it always feels that way to us and then people come back and rave and we finally get interested, but we need to see things like “I Love You Phillip Morris” with Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor as gay men in love like we need a bullet in the head (though to be fair it’s written by the guys who wrote “Bad Santa” so there’s hope).
